Been thinking about putting a rig together for my brother and hit up takealot to look at prices of GPU's and was really surprised to see that they are only really offering 1050ti's and 1650's. What happened to all the other GTX cards? They also seem light on RTX cards, but they dont seem to be alone in that regard in that generally it seems tough to find, for example, a 1070 card? What gives??

There aren't many new GTX cards. All the mid to high range cards are RTX.
You won't find a new 1070.

Stock is an issue due to covid and you'll probably find no supplier has ordered lately with 3000 series launch that just happened. No one wants to sit with expensive old gen stock.

Look through carbonite, but second hand GPU pricing went through the roof as well. Cards that were going for just over 1k last year, going for double that.

I got some money from SARS and had a look at getting a new card as my current one is just too slow for the latest games. I was disappointed with what was available in the R4k range when compared to what was recommended for the games I want to play.

I want to play the Witcher and Cyberpunk and the recommended cards for the newer game seem to be a 1070 which doesn't fit into my budget. That's really crap that you can't spend R4k on a card and just be able to play the newest games.

I can get a PS4 for 4k and be able to play both those games without any issues. That's really lame.

If you dont want that PS4 then let me know...

I would get the PS4 if I were you.
Game prices are dropping for PS4 I've noticed.

RTX 30 series has been announced and is coming so wait before getting a new card I'd say. Its probably also the reason for the shortage of cards atm.

You got lucky. Buying a new 20xx card right now is just setting yourself up for buyers remorse in 2 months time.
Not really, cause in 2 months time it's only the top tier 30x cards coming out and they are like ridiculously priced.

Do NOT buy a card right now unless you get a secondhand bargain. In a couple of weeks RTX3xxx cards will launch and all existing cards will lose value immediately.

Used on Carbonite. I would wait until 3000 series releases though.

The only problem with carb is people selling high end RTX cards have rocks in their heads. They are asking WAY too much. because they bought into a series that was too expensive.

Can I quote this for the absolute truth?

In 3-5 months time Buyers Remorse then, when the 3070 is available and prices stabilize or they may even announce a 3060 or a ti version of the 3070. Also in that time, the 20 series secondhand prices should hit relative rock bottom cause no one in their right mind would pay anything close to 30x series prices.

The market will equalise things, it's how economics work. We'll never be like the US. Just think about the used car market...
