Where did iBurst go wrong? Former CEO speaks

Poor billing + Poor Customer Service + Terrible pricing (though much better now). Those are the 3 main reasons for iBurst's problems, and not the poor technology choice.

We could have lived with the out-dated technology and lower speeds (1mbps):
- if it was provided at a more affordable price. iBurst however choose to charge exorbitant rates, and then back it up with terrible customer service and billing.
- if the internet service was stable and reliable, and backed up with good customer service and billing, even if meant paying a premium price.

With regards to poor technology choice, HC-SDMA was revolutionary when it was first released, but due to non-adoption from other industry players (Kyocera being the only vendor), hardware and equipment is expensive due to poor economies of scale. iBurst should really have pushed WiMax a long time ago, as they had access to the necessary spectrum. They should have dropped HC-SDMA like a cold stone and ran with WiMax all the way to the bank.

Unfortunately, it is now too late, as WiMax will suffer a similar fate to HC-SDMA, though not as harshly, and not as quickly. iBurst need to figure out a way to migrate to LTE, as that is the real future.

Even though HC-SDMA wasn't the best technology choice, for many South Africans, iBurst is/was the only way to get connected to the internet, due to copper cable theft, poor service delivery from Telkom, the MNOs and others. It was also the only other option for those who needed a connection that is faster than Telkom's 384kbps ADSL lines.

My prediction is that within the next 6-24 months, iBurst will be bought out by a large tech company, possibly Altech, BCX, IS or even MWEB, in order to get access to the valuable spectrum they possess. The cellular network operators won't touch iBurst otherwise it will affect their ability to participate in spectrum auctions / acquire more spectrum, which will affect their long term LTE plans.

...they should have hired booth babes... on a more serious note. I have to agree, the technology was wrong.

Oh please, his useless - now he want's to blame the company - good riddance to the Knott-Craig's may they destroy another country's bandwidth prospects. Go to some obscure place in Africa and try your luck there!

I actually think he hit the nail on the head.

Right Tech Choices ( In the beginning ) which then did not get fixed when they became the wrong choices , which compounded the service issues.
Then the billing issues which caused a huge amount of consumer negativity.

If a business is a failure, who can fix the problems both former CEO's mentioned?

Why didn't they?

It seems the real problem was Alan Knott-Craig Junior and not tech choices etc.

Isn't hindsight wonderful? I see that neither Junior nor Jannie can explain why they didn't do something about this when they were in charge. What are CEO's for, after all?

It’s the captain of the Titanic making excuses.
Biggest problem was not Technology or the Billing System…. It was the mindset.
Poor service, bad attitude and a lack of a customer facing culture.
All something that could have been addressed by a competent CEO!
Sorry… but you’re the weakest link – Goodbye!

The biggest mistake was daddy playing nepotism with his pimply faced adolescent looking son and making him the CEO of a national company when he was barely out of university.

I dig Iburst, but the TECH is outdated IMO. Dont worry Ibust you will loose YET another customer by the 13th of April, and one thats been with you for more then 3 years now. Was fun while it lasted

Well what do you expect when the Customer Service Representative slams the phone down in the customer's ear because they're too incompetent to fix their own stuff-up? Also how can you run a company when not one of the departments ever answer any of their e-mails? When not even the supervisor that the problem has been escalated to ever answers their e-mail or even their phone? And when the company just keeps debiting money from the customer's account needlessly? How on Earth can a company exist that is run so badly and cares so little about its customers?

Die iBurst, die!

All I read was "We effed up and had nfi what to do. But we still got paid handsome salaries to make k@k decisions"

Guess these days anyone can become a CEO
