Where do call centres get my number?

This is probably in the wrong thread but don't want to start a new one just for a simple question. How do the telesales people get hold of our numbers? Today I have had two calls from Cell C, and one from Virgin. These people are persistant! The more I say no thanks, the more they talk. So I just hang up. :/

In some countries that is illegal - am not sure about SA. I normally ask them where they got my number, as I'd like to take them and whoever gave them my private info to court for invasion of privacy. That shuts them down quickly.

I wish they would give hefty fines to the mobile operator scumbags. :/

I also had them call me yesterday and today. Wouldn't take no for an answer so I also hung up after clearly saying I'm not interested.

Every time I ask them how they got my number and then boy do they spout a lot of BS.

I know they get my moms number of a credit "white list" (good credit rating)
