I recently started my own company and it seems that every company I do business has asked for a BEE certificate. My company is small (one man show) and upcoming and I'm not in a position to afford to go to a rating agency to get a BEE certificate issued.

What other options do i have to get this done at a minimal cost?

employ me or put me as the director.

Seems strange, what type of services / products do you provide? It's usually only the public sector that would play the BEE card for a one man band.

I provide consulting services.
In corporates, it seems like the norm to ask for a BEE certificate.

Makes sense. Your BEE status as a consultant could impact their status when dealing with public sector tenders etc.

Wasn't there something in the press recently about streamlining BEE accreditation?

good point, I'll do some Googling....

get your accountant to right a letter stating that your turnover is less than R5 million (I'm assuming it is). you can then register with and submit the letter to the dti here http://bee.thedti.gov.za/

they'll approve your status in a couple of days and give you a reference number. This is usually sufficient when dealing with large corporates and parastatals, although it's the first time I've heard of corporates pushing for BEE credentials

this shouldn't cost you a cent

just get your accounting officer or auditor to write the letter stating that you are exempt and are therefore compliant (if your turnover is small enough). I wouldn't recommend the above suggestion as all they do is provide you a certificate whcih doesn't really say anything other than what the auditor/accounting officer's letter says. i.e. they are not a SANAS agent so therefore cannot issue BEE certificates.

EDIT: I mean the above the above suggestion
