Closer to three years given our current expenditure on bottled (RO) water but it's not about that. I'd like to have a supply of potable water for when the taps run dry here because even buying RO water at that stage will be an issue.

Put one of these 5-stage water "purifiers" in a couple years ago, and it seems to have taken our already decent Durban water, to the next level. I've been very satisfied. Filters are over due for replacing, but I'm so lazy.. :giggle:

ok. I cook with it too hence the quicker payoff. have modified mine somewhat by replacing the 50gal/day membrane with 2 100gal/day membranes in tandem thus producing 200gallons a day. This is way more than I need so i sell it to friends who bring their own containers. I have a tds meter and test the water regularly. by having a tank between the big outside tanks and the house I return the membrane rinse water to the tank sothat it can be used for showering and toilets. In this way I save the rinse water that would otherwise go down the drain.

I only know that the water is off around here when friends I haven't seen for a while come round for drinks and arrive with their towel over their shoulder and toothbrush in their pocket!!

The kind with a built in pump is better but what you have is also good. get a total dissolved solids (tds) digital meter (any h2o or similar shop) and test water regularly. as long as tds is below about 6 your membrane is still good. as for the other filters annually will be fine.

I've given up on that. Borehole water now. tank overflows into the storm water system, which flows into the Vaal and eventually dilutes the effluent coming down the Klipriviver
