Exactly, you don't want to risk your beer batch with unknowns. Although I did try one batch using water from natural mountain run off passing it through a cheese cloth filter. The brown ale had a slight marmite flavour, though that's not necessarily due to the waterI use RO to make beer.
R1.6 per litre seems about right. I paid R1.7 today at a different shop that I probably won't be returning to.
