Where is SA really going to end up?

Where will South Africa end up in the next 50 years in your opinion?

  • On par with countries like Brazil, India and the like

Hi All

I would just like to get some opinions as to where South Africa will progress to in the future. I know some of the people on this forum seem to think we will end up like Zimbabwe or some other African banana republic, anyway it is their opinion.

I have another possibility that could come about. CNN has being doing a series of segments on India and how it is over there. Now we all know how the Indian economy has exploded over the years, much like SA but ours being far smaller, however as the CNN reports show is that all that has happened is that the gap between rich and poor has grown to unbelievable levels.

The same can be said for China and Russia where all these Billionaires are coming from. These seem to me as more possible scenarios, so at what price are we willing to have a booming economy?

Your thoughts?
 
We're going to end up... on the southern tip of africa. That's about as much as my crystal ball will tell me.

There's still a chance that SA can swing a proper democracy. However, that chance hinges on people taking responsibility and accepting accountability. Hence with our current crop of politicians, the chance is infintesimally small.
 
I think a large portion of the future of S.A. hinges on the upcoming generation of people who are starting out now, finishing off at vasity, getting into politics, getting into business, the next 5 to 10 years will either make us or break us.
The reason i say this , is that they are not left over from the old government, they dont have the "struggle" mentality, and therefore dont have that predjudice ingrained in them.
 
Nay to the doomsayers. We cannot predict the future; we can only make do with the present. So, how about working on our current situation to determine a better future ? It makes a lot more sense than grim predictions.
 
We'll end up as a G20 member, Security Council member, World Cup host (any sport), Nobel Prize winner home, Manufacturer, exporter, employer, bread basket and Super power of the southern hemisphere,,,same as Aus/NZ but with Crime

...hey that's what we are now? Can't get better than this can it??

I think you said it the best. But dont think it will be 5-10 years there are still way too many struggle buddies around with an interest in politics

I hope that's not quite it. Read far too often of burning tyres and broken windows at tertiary education facilities. Wonder how they found out that tyres burn?

... Wonder what else they learnt there?

Zimbabwe was the same. It took 14 years to get likeit is. There are many similarities. If we dont act quickly it WILL turn out that way. The reason it has not already is because there is a much bigger white population in RSA.
 
I think there are still too many "What Ifs" to know where SA will end up.

What if AIDS continues to kill citizens at the current worsening rate?
What if Jacob Zuma becomes president?
What if he doesn't?
What if SA Gold production dries up?
What if Crime continues to march on virtually unaddressed?

And hundreds more...

What has whites in RSA got to do with anything? You're never going to be anything other than a minority....
 
I think the next 15 years are going to be the deciding factor in the future of SA. If we can get the socio economic aspect of the country right we should be in safer water than we are at the moment.
