Where to get 2nd hand DSLR?

I wanted to try my hand in going the DSLR route. Most recommendations were to get a good second hand camera.

Where would one find a decent second hand DSLR camera? Apart from posting a wanted ad in mybb.

Otherwise which, new, entry-level DSLR camera would you suggest. I read that the Nikon D40 is a good buy atm.

For goodness' sake, don't get a second hand DSLR!

Get the Nikon D40. At R5000, including the 18-55mm lens, there is no better bang for DSLR buck. The D60 is no better. Well, I can't see the deference. Don't waste your time thinking about second hand.

Canon make the excellent Canon 450D, if you want to go Canon.
After taking side by side photos, with both the Nikon D40 & Canon 450D, I could not make up my mind. LOL (it came down to ergonomics) I must say, both companies make fantastic cameras.

www.outdoorphoto.co.za , on their classifieds section there's a lot of second-hand, if you want a second-hand camera. Otherwise I heard many people said the canon 350d is very good, and for a descent price new. Just my thoughts.

don't get the canon 350d! :eek:

that thing has a crap LCD screen compared to the d40
350d came our in early 2005
d40 came out in late 2006
d40 has better lowlight
the d40 is cheaper

The LCD screen has nothing to do with the pics the 350d takes (and I doubt very much whether the 40d is cheaper):

 
I spent the wee hours of this morning on the net researching the D40.

I had no idea that it retails for R5000 incl the lens. That is fine. Although I have a very flexible budget, I did not see myself paying in excess of R8000 for a camera that I might not use very often (my hobbies and interests sway like the seasons).

I would love to get this camera ... in fact I went to Menlyn today to check it out. The only concern I have is if I will actually use it as often as I do my SOny H50.

The one factor that I might not buy go the dSLR route might be mobility and portability. I have never used such a camera before. The thing I like about the Sony H50 is the fact the it has a decent zoom and I can carry it everywhere I go whilst still having my kids in tow. For me the most important factor when it comes to a camera is being able to use it when I want it and not worry about it being bulky.

What are your thought on this for those of you whose own and use dSLR's. Say for example on a trip to Suncity, can you easily take a shot whenever you wish. OR are they too bulky and you have a backup camera for trips?

I usually take at least one dSLR whenever I go out. Just get a smaller more versatile lens (aka a walkabout) for everyday use. I take ±2000 photos a month if that's any indication.

I really appreciate the advice you give on these forums.

For the D40, what would be the walkabout lens that you are talking about, is it the same one that came with the kit?

TBH I dont shoot Nikon so my advice wrt that particular brand is pretty much based on articles which really is a poor substitute for experience.

Calico182 is not only an fantastic photographer but, iirc, a dedicated Nikon shooter so maybe drop him a PM?
 
Damn that be a lot of photos. On my last trip to Thailand, I managed to snap about 6000 photos. In the end I printed out 487 beauties.
