Where to get 2nd hand DSLR?

My 350D's counter is standing on +-5000 can't remember when last i reset it, think it was when i got it in 2005/2006.

I have so far only used the std 18-55mm lens and have managed some great shots, but still want to get me a proper zoom lens 70-200 or something.

I've got the Canon f/4 70-200 and love it. Awesome portrait lens :)

Depends on the camera/manufacturer - Canon doesnt make it easy for people though.

When I started looking around, the overwhelming response (even from 2nd hand dealers) was not to buy 2nd hand.

Get the Nikon D40

jacqvt, ldmelsa and myself both have substantial investment in Canon gear, but we're both singing the Nikon D40's praises. I spent a three days shooting with it alongside my 40D, and I'm very impressed. I'll add the Pentax K100D Super though. It's as good, similarly specified, and probably a little cheaper, if you can find it. The kit lens that comes with is the best I've seen.

Is that your backup body? I have almost that on my 40D and I'm what you can call a "casual shooter" - 4061 as of tonight. This will probably double this time next month :)

The D40 is hardly bigger than the H50

Once you get into it, and lean just how much fan a DSLR is over a P&S, you find ways to take with you. I shoot with a Canon 40D (much bigger and heavier cam, and my walk-about lens weighs more than the D40 and kit lens combined) and it goes EVERYWHERE with me.

Hang on until after Photokina - rumours of a 18-200 IS is pretty strong.

Yes - though my 16-35mm lives on that body now so it's not so much of a backup anymore. My 400D probably has in the region of 40k casual clicks ;)

Data storage is becoming a definite problem :o
 
bwana, do you have an old computer gathering dust? I'm working on an article on building your own raid box with NFS/SMB sharing. NFS works very well on OSX by the way, what with being a UNIX and all.

I do sort of but I'm thinking along the lines of the FW Drobo - I think it would suit my own needs/circumstances better.

You going to share the article once its been written? :)

Yes, certainly. I'm actually doing something similar with my workstation at work today, minus the sharing since it's not a separate machine to the one I'm working on :)

The FW Drobo does look nice, but damn, it's a lot of money. I'm still thinking of getting one though - if only to peek under the hood and see what it's doing.
