Get it from Telkom. The SIM is free.
And the modem?
I am based in Sandton so there where would the nearest telkom store be?
Is there perhaps one in rivonia?
Also will pick n pay etc tell the modem
What frequency does 8ta use?
Will a Vodacom or cellc modem work

I assume you meant "sell" not "tell"... I have never seen the modem at a PnP store. Your best bet would be the 8ta or Vodacom / MTN stores.
Should be 1.8 and 2.1 GHz.
Yes it will... if it is not network locked (most stores can unlock your modem for you). AFAIK operators are not allowed to lock modems any more so any newish modem should work fine on 8ta as well.
