Hi there,

Where do I get the MTN data card from? Or any other HSDPA card that is not locked and that will work with any SP?

I went around Gateway in Umhlanga, Durban, but all the places including MTN tell me that they will only give me a card as part of a contract...

Surely I can buy the card and then have a month-to-month contract?

Thanks

PAV has them

Hi
Pavillion MTN has the cards for sale - purchased one yesterday - only cash or debit cards accespted "because credit cards can be reversed"

Do they have a credit card machine? If so they'd be skating on thin ice for refusing a card for what is an invalid reason.

Taking a contract is still the cheapest way to get the card. You're paying at most the cash price of the card, getting to pay it off over two years and you get airtime.

Agreed - R50 X24 = R1200 + free airtime every month.

MTN SP has it - Fastlink E620- for R49 & free earpiece to make calls (if you call within the next 10 minutes:p ) and then the mycall 100 is included

They also have a businessboost option for SME customers which includes discounted phone calls and free sim & connection. This makes this really a great package.

Their connectstore number is 0860 CELLPHONE. This is valid until 30/9/06.

I've got the info from an MTNSP leaflet. It seems that the reference number of the leaflet is TBWA/HUNT/LASCARIS/607140. Maybe you will need it incase MTNSP does not know about it's own specials. Not that it will ever, ever happen;)

I'm sure if you buy a Data Card from a ISP or even take out a contract you can demand that the card is unlocked because it is illegal to network lock devices as MNP is going to be active in a short while.

Thanks! Hope you dont work for them or something. :D

Here's an idea. Take the contract out with MTN and get the datacard for R50 /month - Then use the sim card for calls and pop a VM sim in the MTN data for cheapest Prepaid data rates. What do you think?

Thanks everyone! This is great feedback...

Too bad I didn't see this all before I tried to get the card on Friday night and saturday morning...

I went to the MTN store in Gateway - the one with a computicket in it... Asked them about buying the card and going month to month, but they told me they don't do that. That was friday night. Then I tried again on saturday morning - went to the same place and asked someone else who told me they don't do it, but I "can go the the MTN store in Pavilion". So I went all the way there and sorted it out. Only going to get it today 'cos of credit checks and all that... :(

Anyway - After going to the Pav, I went back to Gateway for other shopping - By chance I saw another MTN store in Gateway on the opposite end of the other one. I went in and it turns out they would have been able to sell me the card there - That pisses me off!!!!

How can two MTN stores in the same mall not know of each others services??? Why was I told that the MTN in Pavilion "Is the only MTN in Durban" where I can get the data card from!!??

That does sound like a good idea, but only if you don't mind connecting at Virgins GPRS and EDGE speeds... They don't have 3G or HSDPA - That's why they are so cheap... Same thing with Cell C - Both of them should get 3G in December... (So I'm told)

Fear not - no Yello from me.

It does seems from the general tone of post that the service of MTN has improved a bit. They must now just reduce the data cost. Been waiting very long.

Guys

Thanks for helping out here, I was away on Thursday and Friday
