My suzuki is in for a service and they want to charge me R1690 to replace the rear brake pads. That seems excessive.

I could replace them myself, just need to find you tube video on how to do that.

Or is there a place that can do it reasonably priced!?

The pads itself is going to set you back about a R 1200 . If you want to save R 500 then do it yourself it's piss easy. Or just pay the R 500 labour and have it done :p

Yeah, sounds about right for parts and labour. Often the price will include skimming, but at that price, it doesnt sound like it.
Labour is about R700 (about 2 hours) and its a crappy job, i've done it before on some of my older cars, but the new cars are a pain. They now have callipers that you have to retract, and often need special tools to retract it.

In the old days, a simple G-clamp would work.

For most vehicles it still does...

The only ones I know of that it won't are the calipers that use a screw based system on the piston.

gees, 5 years ago, i got brake pads for R300 bucks. cant believe they now 1200 just for two wheels. Will call around.

If you have nice rims and struggle with brake pad dust. Get Ferodo Platinum. I will never buy anything else ever again :o

Suzuki quoted me R1690 for the rear brake pads but they did not say what would be done.

I stopped at a supa quick, they said that without skimming it would be around R1100, and withe skimming R1450.

Is skimming really that important. The guy tried say that is very import to skimm the disks. But I never trust these car places as far as I can throw them. What do you guys think?

Skimming is only important is the surface of the disc is a bit uneven.... and you can only skim so many times before you have to replace the discs.

It honestly depends on how stuffed the discs are. Personally, I believe in not skimming, but rather running the discs till they need replacing.
