Where to replace brake pads

If there is a serious lip on the disc then it'll need skimming if not then just put the new pads on.

Phone midas/autozone/Goldwagen etc for a price on the pads. Decent pads like Ferodo/Ate for any car start at around R400 set.

I am shopping around atm, even just prices on a single type of pad vary so much, anything from R450ex to R850 ex for a ferodo rear pad, and R1440 - R1900 fitted, then another place you can get the front, and rears fitted at R1990.

I am considering going some cheaper brand, i drive like 1500km a year in my car

also just a note, take off a tyre and check the pad yourself, chances are you have anything between 20 - 50% left, the dealers have a policy that if it is 50% or less they ask if they can change it

The the dealer said it was 10% in the back. I found that strange, why would my back brakes be worn out more than my front brakes?

Yeah-no. I won't recommend EBC Yellow Stuff for a non-performance vehicle. For a number of reasons: one they're expensive as hell (R1700 for just my front four), two they're noisy and three it's overkill for a regular road car. In addition you'd have to check that they manufacture the Yellow Stuff pads for your car and I only know of one place to get them in SA - Formula Friction in Edenvale, Johannesburg.

Though I will recommend EBC Ultimax (OEM spec pads) as they also come with a bedding layer that helps to remove burs and ridges on the disc providing an even surface for the actual braking substance.

If it's not screaming don't replace it.

These dealers take the piss with pad life and tell you it's a safety thing so you jump to pay.

Brakes aren't an on/off switch. They take ages to genuinely stop working.

No.
Once the friction material ends, you get metal on metal, and then you're in for new discs. You'll hear grinding at that point. And you may not have heard a single squeak.
Just visually inspect, it's not hard.

Did it today. Bought a front and rear set for R500 from midas. Took the parts to hiQ for fitting at R380 for everything. Worked out way cheaper than the R2200 supaquik quoted me.

On a car without electronic bad sensors it will start squeeling when it hits the end of the groove. A mechanical sensor of sorts.

On a car with electronic sensors this whole conversation isn't applicable.

Most cars have a little tab on the pad that touches the top of the disc when the pad is at around 15 to 20%. It makes a whirring noise at first and then becomes a low grinding noise. Problem is most people ignore it until it's metal on metal

Also depending on the car, you will get a brake fluid warning light come on as the fluid dipped as the brake pads wore.

the recommendations where already heading to another level... so i figured i should take it up a notch..
agreed on not recommending this.. probably not worth it even if you can find it.

im sure i paid more than 1700 for mine... how long ago did you purchase?
