Good day

Can someone here maybe help me? I’m living in Secunda and looking for a way that I can study MCTS or MCPD and I want to work on .net 3.5 or newer, not .net 2.0. I’m currently working so I don’t really want to go to classes.
I have heard about people saying that they just buy the books somewhere and then just go write the exam when they are ready. Does someone here maybe know anything about that? If you do, can you maybe just tell me how does it work, where do I get the text books?

I have googled for places that offer courses like this over the internet, but I don’t know anything about them. Like http://www.it-academy.co.za/

Please help, thanks

Sorry if there’s a similar post somewhere on here

I want to do the following exams
Microsoft .NET 3.5 Windows Apps MCPD 70-563
Microsoft .NET 2.0 App Development MCTS 70-536
Microsoft .NET 3.5 Forms Development MCTS 70-505

Or something similar

You should be able to buy the books online from somewhere like Kalahari. Why don't you write your exams for .Net 4? The .Net 4 books were hard to find though so I ordered them from Amazon.

As for the courses, many of them are a real waste of money since they mostly cover what is in the books anyway.

Be aware though that the exam questions cover more than what is in the books. I would definitely try taking a few practice exams before going to write the real thing.

You can book your exams via the prometric website. If you don't want to book online, you should be able to find a list of testing centres on the prometric website as well.

Hope this info helps.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies, it have helped allot. Personally I want to study Windows Applications, I like it allot more than web development, but how many jobs are there for windows application designers here in SA? Is it worth it? I think of doing the following exams of .net 4

Exam 70-511: TS: Windows Applications Development with Microsoft .NET Framework
Exam 70-513: TS: Windows Communication Foundation Development with Microsoft .NET Framework 4
Exam 70-516: TS: Accessing Data with Microsoft .NET Framework 4
Exam 70-518: PRO: Designing and Developing Windows Applications Using Microsoft .NET Framework 4

I also want to do asp.net, both web and app development... I bought some books last year, but haven't had the time to start properly.

Don't limit yourself. The nature of the business requirement will dictate whether a business application is done in windows or web. a good software developer should be able to tackle both platforms. yes you can be more fluent in the one than the other. Business applications can use both windows and Web at the same time to address different problems or aspects of the system. Software developers are there to address problems that are encountered in the business world.

Well that's my view anyway….

Guys what are your views?

Amazon is best for getting the books, well at a reasonable price. I've used intersoft too. Best at the moment is to use Safari books online which is an online resource for subscribing to books and if the book is worth its weight in gold I buy the tree or kindle version.

Nothing beats experience though and as other people have said, the exams cover more than what is specified in the books. Also from discussions with other people, the microsoft courses are either .net 2 (with extra functionality that make it up then to 3.5) or .net 4.

As for starting off with windows development, there is nothing wrong with starting off with that first. You can always do web development later on as its always good to have a well rounded experience set. I am mostly a web developer, but I've done windows apps, services and lots of MSSQL + SSIS to get the job done.

We do both, I'd add to that. If you have more than one skill then you would be more likely to keep and have a job over just being able to do desktop applications. However it is not a bad place to start with one and work to many.
