One of my friends has an account with Rectron, but it is a mission to go that route.

Does anybody know of a decent alternative in the Western Cape.
I'm looking for a new mobo, and cpu and maybe memory, but Santa has a limited budget this year.

How trustworthy is online shops? e.g. Techmall, pcshopping.

Since you are in the Cape try landmarkpc. Always had excellent service from them.

I have used sybaritic many times and their service is excellent, so are the products, have heard lots about prophecy and landmark, doubt you will have any problems with the above mentioned

whenever I'm in Cape Town for busines, I stop past DC3 and pick up something, they always got decent specials on and the service I have recieved has been good.

You can also try Take2 (www.take2.co.za). If you're in Cape Town you can also pick up orders directly from them, if you want to, and save on the shipping. They're based near Century City iirc and they've always given good service in my experience.

Only other suggestion is shop around. I've found over time some places seem to have better prices for certain classes of items than other places, and not everyone has the most cost-effective brands.

DC3 wow!

I'm looking at their pricelist not bad.
Can anyone buy there or do you have to be a dealer?

I'm looking for a DDR3 motherboard and memory and then a decent core2duo cpu.

But after looking at the prices (even Rectron), it's a bit over my budget.

Any reason why?

DDR3 gives a minute performance increase over DDR2.

It only makes sense to get a DDR3 board if you're going Intel i7 Nehalem.

I guess it's so that he doesn't have to buy RAM again for his next upgrade :)

By that time I think/hope that DDR3 RAM and mobos would have come down a lot in price. :)

I just don't think it makes sense now since DDR3 seems to be a lot of hype and it's just hit the market.

Anyone can buy, just need to set up an account with them, like Cyberdyne, but you can walk in off the street.

And if its DDR 3...Unless you have a budget the size of and oil baron, I'd still stick with DDR 2, but thats just me. That and with the new i7 Core release, I'd wait for the prices to push the Core 2 Duo/Quads down before taking the plunge.
