Yes.
Most Standard Definition field ENG (Electronic News Gathering) cameras can record 16:9 or 4:3. And ALL HD cameras do
The most popular is the Sony PD170...

SABC will have test broadcasts by 2008, but this depends on Sentech's DTV rollout.

And sentech currently cant get enough money out of the government to upgrade the DVB-T transmitter? that NEVER went live since 1998 (thanks to ICASA)

I do agree with the principle... but Sentech is also the 'Third national operator' the 'Official internet to the masses provider' ad nauseum. Sentechs arrogance and non-delivery is making suppliers re-think the value of sentech being a customer.

Seeing that No-choice has been trying to get Dolby AC3 running for the past year ... I cant see them getting Hi-def anytime soon. (MM1)

Ahh - the current decoders already do this. The broadcast has to be in 16:9 for the decoder to present it that way though. Tested it on channel 25 with the sport and it works great - tell the DSTV you have a 16:9 TV and it displays it that way, tell it you have a 4:3 TV and the pic is scrunched up.

DSTV already have some channels on HDTV.
It's not on public as yet but i have seen some of their Channels on a Seminaar. After ESPN on HDTV I vowed to get HDTV the moment it's launched on DSTV !

If there are any HD channels broadcasting on any of the PanAm satellites used by MultiChoice, what compression are they using?
The currently it would have to be MPEG4...the last time I checked all DSTV was compressed to MPEG2 which is quite bad.

I don't know sh.t about HD.... I was invited to a Pre-launch thing with my friend.... But I have to be honest ... It truly blu my mind ! They we're showing NFL You could see the sweat drops on the guys face... and the redness from the exhaustion... It's truly amazing.

Can't wait for that...but since they don't really listen to the customer we can't expect decent pricing for HD DStv...
HDTV in Souuth Africa?
We will definitely see some HDTV cannels soon. I hope when Multi choice start their HDTV broadcast they will allocate a descent amount of bandwidth to the channel. I wonder if we will see a decoder with a HDMI connecter. The SABC is in process of converting all its technology to digital and so is SENTEC. The SABC bought a new outside broadcast van last year that is fully HD and can support up to 1080i. The van is also equipped with a 5.1 sound studio. Last year we saw the final soccer world cup match in HDTV and it was awesome. The picture was projected on a cinema screen with no pixilation. They'd need new decoders to broadcast HDTV anyway so I suppose they could then get rid of legacy MPEG2 and move on to MPEG4.

MPEG 2 is not "bad" as such, just less efficient than MPEG4. Multichoice could broadcast HD using MPEG2, but the bandwidth required would go up from the current 2Mbps average per channel to at least 6-8Mbps. That means fewer channels (which is no problem for me - I can point out at least 5 or 6 channels that can go and won't be missed (by me)... like Rhema, TBN, Animal Planet, Boomerang, Bloomberg, MSNBC, Summit, etc...)

or very high quality...depending which side of the fence you are sitting onthat's very poor compression
just busy watching a normal mpeg2 dvd right now, coming in at 5Mbps, this is with 2 channel audio.
so, 4 times the pixels+3 times the audio, 20Mbps doesnt seem so elaborate anymore.
