Which 1Mbps package and which ISP to choose

Hello,

I read this thread http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/65100-uncapped-adsl-bundle-price-comparison.html and saw that people are happy with MWEB.
I wanted to sign-up for their service, but there are two minor issues:

1. Their two free months ADSL offer expired at the end of December.
2. They require a debit order for payment for the first three months after which I can switch to EFT.

With no real hook anymore to encourage me to sign up with MWEB, I am considering all my options.

With that in mind:

1. For R199/month, is there any better deal in the market than MWEB in terms of network stability, good customer support, JHB telephone number, no debit order and generous data cap for 1Mbps uncapped ADSL?

2. Is the package from MWEB equivalent to the Vanilla Uncapped ADSL package from Openweb at R179/month?

Take a look at Afrihost uncapped for R 197-00 pm. I am quite happy with this package, did over 100Gb last month. Just remember the ADSL line costs are seperate.
 
MWEB

It's worth it, they don't **** around with debit orders like the rest of the folks out there and I've been happy since they launched their uncapped product (thats when I switched)

Yea if you want to have a rude ******* answer you sarcastically whenever you're experiencing issues, then this is the service to go for.

The international issues MWEB *had* was solved quite quickly, and they have sufficient backup capacity to switch if there are issues. I've never had prolonged downtime with MWEB, in fact, my ADSL line had more downtime than I had with MWEB (and we're talking a few hours over the course of a couple of years here)
 
IMO debit order vs downtime/slow to non existing internet = winning, each to his own.

All OP has to do is a search for mweb downtime/slow speeds on this forum. The 400 million "my internet is soooo slow" or "my internet is broken again" threads speak for themselves :)

EDIT: Oh and on the very rare occasion that I have to get into contact with OpenWeb, I never get anything but top of the line service/responses. I guess it's all in how you handle the situation to begin with.

I have to agree with Sl8er.

Hardly ever have to contact Openweb. Everything just works. And when I do need to contact them they always quickly help me, even on public holidays or in the middle of the night.

I am on Gold though.

Some things concern me about Openweb after reading http://openweb.co.za/special.html

1. "Special is subject to activating a debit order."

I am trying to avoid a debit order, but at least MWEB claims to allow a switch to EFT after three months.

2. "Current clients cannot downgrade or cancel an account in favour of the promotional package."

This means that if I become a customer and they drop their prices in the future, I will not be able to take advantage of the discount.

Does MWEB also lock in the price once you have signed?

It seems that a debit order is the default method of payment. MWEB, Afrihost and Openweb all require debit orders, or advance payments (6 months for Afrihost).

Regarding customer service, I tested out their Call Me Back service:

1. Afrihost: called back after 2 hours.
2. MWEB: called after two days and apologised for the backlog.
3. Openweb: doesn't seem to offer that particular facility.

I have chosen to go with MWEB. Why?

1. The only recommended ISP in this thread that allows EFT payment (after three months).
2. Generous and confident enough to offer a try before you buy (7 day trial).
