Which 55" TV?

I've now settled on the Samsung 55D8000 LED TV.

Great TV, not much can touch the vivid, clear, sharp picture of the new high-end LEDs. My only complaint is they actually too sharp/clear, with poor quality input signal (SD e.g) they exagggerate/expose all the imperfections.

The same set goes for R16k in the States but we have to fork out nearly R50k....

Please test for banding on the D8000 before you purchase. I'm on my second D7000 and it's going back for an LG LW6500. Samsung seriously screwed up their tv's this year. Both my sets had some serious banding, clouding and edge bleeding problems. The clouding and edge bleeding I can maybe still live with but banding is unacceptable for me. It's like playing the lottery when you buy a high end Samsung LED TV this year. They simply made the bezel too thin. Go and check on avsforum.com for the UNXXD8000 owners and UNXXD7000 owners threads.

I've been all over those threads. IT seems that the latest build models seems to be of better quality.
But I will definitely keep an eye out for it.

Just remember that the model sold here different to the one sold in US.

The D7000 & 8000 are truly beautiful sets just a pity the chances of getting one without any problems are so slim. Also the D7000 is exactly the same as the D8000 only difference being the aluminium bezel on the D8000 and the D8000 having a Clear Motion Rate of 800hz vs the 600hz of the D7000.

You can go for the 55D7000 and save almost R10 000.

I just recently purchased the 46d8000, I cant say I am too happy with this screen. The colour does not seem to be accurate, the bleed is not minor and the judder is aweful. Ive read many forums and tried all the various things others have tried to minimise these issues. Its a lot of money to spend to get something that is not accurate, I had a Samsung C650 40" screen before which is a LCD, the picture quality in total was better than this.

I went fro this D8000 because I thought that it would be better because of the refresh rate etc, I am waiting for the store who I purchased it from to get back to me, i may have to go plasma if I am going to get a better picture.

Just not sure.

Try finding all the pro reviews around the web the include calibrated settings (inc 10pt). They wont exactly match you environment, but will give you a feel for whats possible and a good place to start for doing your own tweaking.

the bleed is not minor

Yep, in low light with a partially illuminated black screen the light distribution consistancy is not great. My experience is once you put a image on the screen the inconsistancy is not apparent.

judder is aweful

Difficult one to understand taking into account its Samsung's best motion engine (800Hz CMR). I have a lower D6000 (200Hz CMR) and the picture is silky smooth under all conditions, with no horizontal or vertical judder. Again maybe settings related (I use Motion Plus=Clear & LED Motion Plus=On)

i may have to go plasma if I am going to get a better picture.

If the lighting inconsistancy does bug you then maybe a better option. Unfortunately Samsung dont bring the equivalent class/size plasma into SA (unless you go for the 64" monster). Maybe look at LG's top of the line 50PZ950/60PZ950, or check if any specialist AV stores have bought in the Panasonic ST/GT/VT30 plasmas.

If you are going to play alot on the TV just watch out for input lag, this is not he same as refresh rate and is related to the lag between when you press a button on the controller and something happens on screen.

Panasonic 55GT30 Awesome TV. Paid 24k six months ago. Importing it from USA. No offence mate, but you must be crazy to pay 50k for that Samsung. Don't support those bloodsucking bastardos, that are calling themselves local official distributors. Panasonic TVs in CT are entry models and they asking the price for a GT and VT ones.
