Which 8ta modem is fastest, and works in linux?

I want to connect my 8TA modem to a linux box, and have the linux box act as a router.

I don't know which 8ta modem to go for. They only have the E173 at our shop. As far as I know, that is the cheap one. I want the fastest one their is. Which one should I go for.

I tried to find this in the forum, but found conflicting results since some people had good speeds with the E173.
 
Why use a whole pc as a router??

Just buy one of these TP Link or Netgear 3G routers*, get a 43Mbps stick modem & you're rocking!

*The 3G routers just work on the USB speeds, so you can theoretically go upto 480Mbps, if it's USB 2 ports.
 
Obviously the linux box is more than just a router. It's also a firewall and squid server etc.

If I was to get a directional kit and everything, which router & modem combo should I go for. I was thinking of going for the TP-Link that everyone uses, but is the E1820 a good device to go with it. Does it have a directional antenna support?"
Or does the 3G router have it's own internal modem to connect to the highsite?

The E1820 works well with the TP-Link.
Does it have a directional antenna support?
The E1820 does have an external antenna connector, but if you plug in an antenna the signal strength does not seem to improve. You can use an inductive coupler from Poynting though.
Alternatively, look at the Vodafone K4605 modem, it has an external antenna connector that works.

You can get complete 3G routers like the B970, but the 3G routers that take a USB modem like the TP-Link seem to be more popular. You can unplug your modem if you need to use it on the road for a while, and you can replace the modem with a faster one easily.
 
Well, I've been using the E367. I bought a TP-Link MR3420 from Uniterm (they're quite cheap). But more importantly, the TP-Links can be flashed with openwrt and can then function as my home gateway.

With the E367, I needed to use these instructions

to get usb_modeswitch to work correctly.

Network manager didn't detect my E367 when I plugged it into my Ubuntu box, but I didn't experiment much - there is no reason why it shouldn't work and I guess one would just need to tweak the usb-modeswitch stuff to recognize the vendor and product id.

I would personally buy the cheaper E173 if I had to do things over - my speeds are only 1.5Mbps in any case, and one could save the R500 to buy the TP-Link ;-)

The specifications of these two devices are the same.
It is only the form factor that is different.

I read on another thread and some other places (can't remember where, but huawedevice.com did not list the e367) that the e367 is newer and support 900MHz HSPA+, so CellC capable - which is why I'm trying to find out if the MTN e367 is locked or not and can do CellC with a prepaid sim, or whether one should get the CellC contract and switch to MTN prepaid (if possible) when necessary. (Insert Vodacom for MTN as well).

no mobile devices are allowed to be networked locked
