Which ADSL modem for Linksys WRT54G?

why not try the Linksys ADSL2MUE modem? I've had good service from mine with no problems to report. Been running for close on 3 months.

Edit: And welcome to MyADSL, hope you enjoy our stay!

thanks for the info

i've look at most of the local SA shopping sites but can't find any these babies.

anybody got a contact?

Whoa, wtf I always thought the wireless router was also a modem?!

nope

the linksys wrt54g is a broadband router, you need to supply your own modem.

Most routers has a adsl modem built in but that means you can only use it for adsl, with the linksys you can use cable/wireless/isdn/adsl.....

thanks CodeMaster :D

In the UK the guy I stayed with had a wireless modem, and u could have a lan network over it as well!

u saying that normally u can only share the internet connection with a wireless modem? Not actual computers on the wireless network?

i'm lost as normal :)

no the linksys wrt54g got 5x lan ports + wireless + one port for broadband where you stick in your modem

if you got the wrt54g + modem = all pc on wirless + lan ports can access internet

all pc's over the wireless can also access "wired" lan and visa versa

Yeah, but then u need an additional modem as well. Why can't u just have an ADSL modem wireless router in one?

..you mean like the WAG354G..?
I've got one of those "out in the wild" (i.e. at clients' premises). It does a good job: built in antenna that'll take care of your close-range wireless needs and an RP-SMA connector hidden under a pop-out flap. The REALLY funky part about that is that you aren't even restricted to using just some piddly little 2dBi dipole or anything - I had this thing hooked into a 13dBi flat panel on the side of a house (in its previous deployment) and it *really* Did The Business(tm)!

Anyhow, just so you know...

I am using the Microcom Deskport 1000 ADSL modem that has a single ethernet port with a WRT54G for the following reasons.

1. A hacker must break through two devices to get to my machines (Microcom and WRT54G)

2. Flexibility. When SNO/Other goes non ADSL to WIFI/WIMAX/POE or whatever, I just need to change to another "modem" device with a single WAN/Ethernet port.

3. The microcom allows you to reject any management from the ADSL WAN Side, (Password stealing etc etc)

4. The Cost combination - A Microcom modem and WRT54G is about the same price as a good Linksys/Netgear/Dlink ADSL Router with 4 lan and wifi combination.

5. The excellent flexibility (Firmware options) of the WRT54G

6. Microcom is reletively cheap to replace in the event of lighting killing it.

I have had no issues with this combination at all

OK, i've got the modem. Great service from pcmall.co.za, ordered yesterday recieved today.

Installed, it gave it a ip, whack my PPPoE details into the linksys adsl2mue and the internet is working. Connect, surf via modem ip.

I'm running the modem thru one of the wrt54g lan ports, if I stick the network cable from the modem into router's "internet" port on the back things go bad.

The router is setup to PPPoE, with the correct username/password but no luck. Changed default gateway on pc to router's ip with no luck, also can't ping the modem. Change the cable from the internet port on the router to a normal lan port and all works fine.

Modem,pc and router is all running on the same ip range and subnet.

So any idea?

Ok, I bought the Linksys WAG54G - crap as they come. Out of 18 week owning it, it onlyu worked for 6! Serious!

Ramzi,

You must run the Modem in bridged mode! Connect with PPPoE via the router.

If your modem is not connected via the LAN port you are not protected by the firewall.

Do the following:
1) Plug the modem into your PC, set it to bridged mode and assign IP 192.168.1.1
2) Plug only the router into your PC and and set the router IP to 192.168.1.3 and switch DHCP on.
3) Under Internet setup select PPPoE from the dropdown list and enter your DSL username and password.
4) Now plug the telephone line and Ethernet into the Modem, ethernet into the LAN port on you router and switch on.
5) Router should connect you via the modem adn the firewall setup you can change if you want to.

Remember: Once the modem is in bridged mode, you have to reset the modem to change any settings in the future. It will not connect with an IP to your PC in bridged mode.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you came right

shot grubsnet, will give it a bash

The modem must be set to "bridged mode only"?

Mine is setup exactly the same as Grubsner, except my modem in on 192.168.1.1, the router is on 192.168.1.2 and DHCP range starts at 192.168.1.100.Just make sure the modem is in bridged mode, and turn DHCP off on the modem, and make sure it is turned on in the router setup.

cool, i'm going to try that now ..... if you never here from me again you know it didn't work :)

Thanks CodeMaster!

I think the DHCP on the modem is disabled by default if running in Bridged mode.

Thanks for filling in the gaps there!

sweet it works, thanks boys

One last Q -

Do you guys run the DNS from the router or PC?
