Hi All,
I do hope that my query is not too elementary or off-point....

I have a ADSL Modem & 4 lan port Router with Wireless option.
Netgear DG834GU (v5)

My limited understanding is that I can have a max of 4 connections,
be it wired or wireless, max mixed is 4. eg 1x lan + 3x wireless etc.

I wish to either buy a new ADSL modem Router which will allow
8, or more, connections, be it wired, wireless, or mixed.

Or what can I connect to my current modem to expand it to at least 8 or more? chan
wireless.

I appreciate feedback which will point me in the correct direction.

Thanks you.

There are not really hard limits enforced by the router.

If you have more devices, they should just work. Try it, and see. It's really about how much data they are transmitting (packets per second) and whether the router has sufficient resources such as RAM, CPU, etc, to keep track of the address translation, and forward the packets without dropping any.

I don't believe that you will be limited to 4 concurrent connections. You are limited to 4 wired connections but wireless will be around 25 from what I have read. Why not try it and see before replacing it.

Depending on the wireless standard, and assuming you are using a non-ultracheap router, a low range wireless ADSL router should be able to handle 32 wireless connections. Right now at my house, between the plethora of tablets, phones, laptops and computers between all 7 of us, at last count we have 28 wireless devices - no issues.

I have the same router, 3 wired devices and 6 wireless devices connected to it at once. So you should only be limited to 4 wired devies unless you add in a hub.

Hi There,
You could extend the wired connections with a hub if you have more of those connections.
Wireless it should easily handle 20 plus but you may have throughput issues if all of them are active at the same time.

I agree with the other posts that reccommend that you try it first before taking the wallet out of the pocket.

Regards

Tim
