Which ADSL Router

On the telkom site it lists their routers and says these are the only ones that work.

I am looking for a router that has a built-in firewall the number of ports is irelevant as it will connect straight into a switch, Can some one help ... before my boss signs 24month contract!
 
Go for Dlink

NEVER,NEVER,NEVER EVER go for the Telkom ADSL router. IT IS RUBBISH.

I have always gone with Dlink for network equipment for all my clients. I have not got a single faulty product in 3 years. It's got a 5 year warranty.
This is a basic router with firewalling features
DSL-504T Dlink Ethernet ADSL Router (TI chipset)
look to pay R700 to R800 retail

Also consider the following one
DSL-G604T 802.11g+ Wireless ADSL Annex A Router (TI chipset) with 4-port 10/100M Ethernet Switch
It has a built in wireless access point. Nice for your boss's laptop :)
you pay around R1200

If you are looking for something a bit cheaper have a look at Netgear.

Dispite this we got the telkom 5100 and my boss likes the fact that it is working therefore doesn't want to change it.

I do have one question about the 5100 it says firewall with packet filtering, this doesn't qualify for Statefull packet inspection does it?

The first Marconi ADSL routers (single 10BT) were terrible, evertime you made
a change you had to Click Save, Reboot. No remote management like
the Netgear DG834 series, Takes you 2 minutes to setup and port forwarding
is a breeze to setup, if those port have not been shaped of course.

The next batch of Marconi with the 4 port switch had a nicer interface, stick to the models that seburn mentioned Linksys, Netgear, Billion (no experience) & Dlink. Planet ADSL are quite cheap and easy to setup.

I have this one, works brilliantly so far. Easy setup, easy to change settings etc. Have also used the 4 ports for LAN and works 100%.

I think the only bad thing about it is the price, but that is just telkom being telkom. oh and its ugly
 
I thought the Marconi with the 4 port and the Planet Router use the same chipset, Connexant, ithink. The interface is pretty similar as well

Yip my one as well. Also find the Wi-Fi was a easy to setup, port fowarding also easy to do, no problems this side. :)
 
I am using the Telkom 5100 and have been happy so far. Telkom at R999 is overpriced but unless you have to pay for it does it matter?

AFAIK the Telkom 5100 is a repackaged Billion 5100 which received very good reviews in Australia when introduced. I understand that it is similar to the Billion 5102 without the support for ADSL2.

Ease of setup on the planet is a breeze! The newer versions even auto-config you VCI, etc for you, it really is a plug in, type in password and work router. Price wise though.. It depends. I just paid 1.2k for my new Planet ADW-4300, But it has more features than any other Router I've seen for the same price range, and the wireless works like a charm.

My only big concern with the new Planets, is they no longer give you the SNR/Attenuation, etc. I enquired with planet about this and manufacturer replied.. "It was removed since it should all be configured and setup correctly before you even get the router, Your service provider will have logs of these which you can get as they are supposed to do checks to insure that it is correct at least every 24 hours."

I think I'm laughing as much now again typing that as I did when I first read it
