I currently have an 8dbi OMNI, connecting 3 guys to me. The one is in a bit of a dip, 1km away, and gets 70% ping responses. interestingly, Skype works well.

My questions is, get a stronger omni or a sector, we are all located within the sectors range...

The sector is almost a R1000 more, is it really worth the extra cash?

If there are only illegal WISPS in your area, go ahead and use a 15dbi omni (R600), those work very nice :) Punish those illegal wisps while you're at it :)

My experiment with a 15dbi omni surpassed all my expectations, it provided 360deg coverage, was able to connect to it from 7km away, performance was good.

However WISPs expect of us to play nice and not to use omni's, while they themselves are making the most of the benifits omni's have, like connecting 100+ clients on one omni.

There are downsides to using omni's (weapons of mass destruction), they tend to punish all other networks in the area, but who cares about the wisps, just make sure you dont cause trouble for a WUG :)

Thats the thing, there are WUGs in the area, and I wanna join our little network to ctwug using a RB133 and 2 c9s in december.

atho,

Why are you so negative towards wisps? They are fighting against telkom!!

They are causing alot of RF pollution (noise) , severely degrading everyone's links. Do you want me to appreciate that?

ROFL @ wisps fighting telkom, most wisps illegally resell connectivity from 4mb telkom adsl lines, im not saying all of them.

When Telkom feels threatened, they reduce their prices, and crush rivals, however i agree opposition is necessary to make this happen. In the end we'll pay less when Telkom launches a price war with their rivals. :D

A 14dbi 120degree hyperlink sector would be more appropriate then :)

Apparently the 15dbi omni is too noisy for the first 1km, and signal is unusable... any experience with this ath0?

I dont think that is true, and if so, its something else causing the noise.

15dbi omni's are Weapons of Mass Destruction, WISPs will cover 12km x 12km areas with one of them, connecting upto 100 clients to one radio.

Just make sure the omni is not mounted too high, or too low, they have limited vertical beam width, but this doesn't cause problems.

And if you decide to use a omni, try to determine if it would hurt a nearby wug, if not, then go right ahead :)

If its just you vs. the wisps, use any means to make your network grow.

Well i see alot of posts from people warning others to look for nearby wugs before putting up these omni's. Does this then mean that wugs dont use them because it would seem unfair that they can put them up but someone who wants to connect a few friends cant.

When making wifi related decision's, always ask yourself what is best for wug.

please, no more omni's! 2.4ghz is almost completely useless in tableview/parklands. Doesn't help with the d1ck on the hill next to chinese takeaways with his big 15dbi omni and only a single client on it, last time I checked. At 8dbi and range 1km, a 15dbi omni ain't going to help, if he is in a dip, the signal is just going straight over him. If your using wrt54g/gl, turn down your power output, if your using senao, get wrt54gl.

Don't forget Millpark ( Sentech office ). Did work there and also noticed a nice 15dbi omni... but it was an armed response one... maybe these guys are adding to the problems that wisps are.
