I use avast anti-virus software, the one I have is free and i downloaded it from the net.

Which anti-virus software do you have on your home/work pc/laptop? Did you buy it or download it for free?

While I'm still at it. Sometimes my pc gets infected with Trojan horses, malware and viruses. There's an option of deleting that particular document or file that contains that malicious software, I always choose the option to "delete" that file or "abort". Is that good enough? Is there maybe a malicious virus on my pc that isn't detected by my Avast anti-virus software? I ask this because whenever I scan my pc, it's results (after scanning my whole pc) always show no viruses on my pc.

I'm using the Microsoft one (sorry, forgot its name now) and standard M$ firewall under XP. Can say that since I've activated auto updates and do them at least once a week, my system is so stable.

Also the M$ AV is so optimised that I do not notice it while playing online. I've got an old P4 and dumbed AVG a year ago when it started to get bloated.

At a recent LAN a nasty virus was hitting all the PCs. I was able to do a complete recovery the next day.

You can download the Kaspersky and BitDefender LiveCD there is even a 3rd live cd which scans with 2 AV at the same time. It's called G-DATA and uses AVAST! and BitDefender engines.

Here's a list of the most common ones with download links:
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives...-compared-in-search-for-the-best-rescue-disk/

If you have an ethernet linked internet modem then the LIVE CD will do a definitions update before scanning your system.

All of this is free BTW - the live cds don't check to see that you own a Kaspersky or BitDefender license.

This is the most reliable way of scanning for viruses - other than un-mounting your harddrive and connecting it another computer but booting off the host drive.

I use Avira antivirus. They have a free version that doesn't use a lot of resources and has one of the best virus definitions! The free version brings up an advertising window when updating but I find it doesn't really bother me. Give it a try.

The MS one is dog slow. It chews up resources like mad. I'm disappointed with it for that reason.

I use to find the old one was like that, but the new one is perfect. I don't even notice it is there and I'm running it in normal mode. Just to give you an idea of my PC (3Ghz P4 socket 478, 2GB-DDR400, AGP7600GS) and I can play my BF2142 or CSS without any lag.

I'm running XP so not so sure how it performs on W7 or Vista.

If you want free I will recommend Avira.

Have to agree with you on this, it's not bad but it is resource hungry. You notice this especially on lower end hardware. I installed it on a older celeron laptop and you definitely notice its impact.

If your AV is so good then why do you need a 3rd party app to do some housekeeping?
Some AVs specifically exclude adware. And for some things SpyBot is simply superior. Nothing wrong with his approach.

Avast free ed and commodo firewall. Not sure why I bother though...haven't seen a proper virus in years. I'm thinking thats because I haven't been to a LAN in a long time.

AVG Free. Used Avira for quite sometime until a virus found its way through Avira's defences. So now back on AVG - and it works pretty well. Using Comodo for a firewall.

I used to have spybot search and destroy on my pc, but I later deleted it and I think I will install it again. I've only heard nothing but good comments about it.
