Played around with a few options since starting on the Linux journey about 6 months ago (dual-booting with Win7).
I don't even remember the 3 or so other options I've tried, but this is the best brightness controllor I've come across (should work on any Ubuntu-based distro., and surely Debian as well ?):

Terminal Commands for installation :
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:indicator-brightness/ppa
