So the story goes.... ( Standard Bank )

Thursday 22nd Sept. out of the blue my credit card does not work anymore. hmm so I thought it's just a glitch.

Just before I left work decided to log into my internet banking... and all accounts have been suspended !!

So , E-mailed my so called personal banker at around 4:30pm asking her why and I could see she read my e-mail and still up to day no response. OK then.. Took 3 hours off work the next day to go into a branch and they told me it's because of FICA.

Well I handed over all the stuff and was assured everything is fine now. BUT it's not.. I still cannot draw money at any ATM to this day .... 3 days later.

Apparently they sent an SMS to me, but the number they mentioned I never heard of ... and they tried to convince me it was my previous number..

So now I'm looking at FNB ... ?

Don't change banks just because you have a FICA problem. It'll follow you wherever you go. Rather sort it out and build a relationship with your bankers.

Problem is ... my 'personal' banker don't respond . Anyhow after hours on the phone I found a way to get some cash. Had to send myself some card-less money, worked !!

Get a backup account at Capitec, just like everything in SA you need a backup. BTW my bank is FNB they did the same to me. Sat at a petrol station for 3 hours while they found out an idiot forgot to tick a box on the computer.

Shot , will look at Capitec... they seem to be reasonable. Only reason I stuck with Standard is I worked for them long time ago.

Same thing happened to me twice when I was with Standard. I shifted to FNB, and kept a credit card with Standard. Now I'm covered no matter which bank goes offline. For what it's worth, FNB has a great internet banking platform.

Do they assist in getting all your debit orders sorted ? I have plenty

It doesn't seem like a FICA problem but a Standard Bank problem.

Strandard pulled the exact same stunt with me and several family members. We've moved to Capitec and couldn't be happier.

E-mailed my so called personal banker
Its a grand upselling marketing scam. No actual personal/private banker looks more like this: Bank offering to keep a cloned card open despite it being confirmed as cloned & actively in fraudulent use...just to avoid stranding a client overseas.

...freezing a card because of FICA...fkin lol. Private bankers don't freeze cards, certainly not for stuff like that.

It's all about building a relationship with your private banker.

My private banker responds within 10min on my emails and she sorts everything out a.s.a.p.

Couldn't be happier with Standard Bank.

Banks do normally treat the clients thats fortunate enough to qualify for a personal banker quite well. If u do have a real problem with the banker assigned to u, u should just find the correct channel to lodge a formal complaint and all your problems will disappear.

This is pretty much my own experience with my Standard Bank private Banker. I have been a private Banking client for more than 20 years, and have had very few problems. I have retired now, to a very small WC town, and in the last 5 years I have not even been into my local SB branch more than a couple of times. My Sandton-based Standard Bank private bankers look after me admirably in spite of the physical distance between us

But only one side is getting paid to do so...
Ja, that is so. But they're also hewmin beans, and very few can do these things just for money.

I'm completely with you, of course. They have a job to do, and should get on with it to the best of their ability. My only (minor) point is that there's a human dimension, too.

Managing your banker is not unlike managing staff. It's quite an art to get results from other people in a non-contentious way.

Why? Isnt it the banker's job to build a relationship with you, and not the other way around?

Goes both ways. Yes the private banker gets paid for the job but it's easy to stand out between all her other clients with just a little effort from your side.

It's a service job, consultants are much more inclined to quickly help someone if they like the person.
