Hi guys.

I'm finally over my Nokia 5800XM, I'm having endless problems with it and I think it's time to switch to a new manufacturer.

I know nothing about Blackberry's so I need your input please.

As far as I understand with my limited knowledge, if I have a BB and my girlfriend has a BB that means we could communicate free of charge on BIS and BBM with each other.

Is that correct?

I also need a BB that has 3G connectivity as I'm not a fan of Edge speeds to be honest.

Except one on one communication, I'd like to use a phone that is updated regularly to resolve issues (firmware etc.) and that has the capability to have applications. Does BB have a store like Ovi for Nokia?

Thank you for any advice,

Regards,
tera ;) :D :p

Id say the BB 9300 Curve. Its cost effective and value for money in the BB range. If you have extra cash to spend buy the BB Bold 9780. Awesome phone and comes with Version 6 Operating System which works well.

The 9300 has 3G and Sat Nav as a plus.

BIS includes BBM :) so you can receive emails effortlessly and a keyboard away to chat to your GF.
BIS is R60 per month on top of your package (R135pm + R60) but there are specials where the BB is R79pm and thats includes BIS BUT it comes with a lower spec BB aka the 8520 ( No 3G)

BB has "Blackberry APP World" where u can download apps.

hope this helps.

Torch.
I have mine since Feb and it is a great phone with the latest firmwear.

If you have Bis enabled you will be able to message your friends with BBM free of charge.
You will also be able to send them vids of limited size, pics and sounds via bbm free of charge.
You will be able to browse the internet free of charge and download items (limited size) free of charge.

BB will change your life!

Gotta agree with JAM007. Depending on your budget go for either the 9300 or 9780.

@teraside.
Any particular reason why the phone has to have 3g.
There are packages around where you can get a contract for less than R120 including BIS on the Curve 8520.
No video streaming on BIS means that 3g is not an absolute requirement.

I'd kill myself if I dint have 3G dude. I mean seriously!

There might be no streaming..... But LOTSA downloading! Haha

Thank you everyone.

Boyah, if I am going to change phone types I will rather be on 3G than Edge or GPRS. Even if it is a BB and optimized for it's connectivity type, it would be extremely painful for me to use any phone without 3G. My 5800XM has a 5mp Camera and HSDPA 3.6 mbps so I won't go for the 9300 either. That would mean I have to downgrade in camera quality, photos as well.

The 9780 looks really promising since it has HSDPA and 5mp Camera and I see MTN has it for R249 pm including BIS costs, with R100 airtime.

Where does the Torch come into? Is it the Ultimate BB to have or is it just another model?

Edit: I see it's R239 pm on MTN Direct.

Torch is the first Blackberry to combine both a hardboard keyboard and a touch screen. Also the first to run OS6.0. It is currently the BlackBerry flagship device but will soon be replaced by the Bold 9900 (a more traditional looking BlackBerry - portrait keyboard and screen, but the screen is also touch sensitive).

If you're on a budget - 9300.
If you're not and wants the best keyboard and not too concerned with touch-screens: 9780
If you're not on budget and wants keyboard and touch screen: Torch.
If you're not on budget and wants the biggest keyboard and touch screen: wait 2 - 3 months for the Bold 9900.

Do NOT get the 8520 - it is currently too old. Unless you're really only interested in messaging.

Thank you. So it's between the Torch and 9780.

I'll show both to my girlfriend and hear her opinion. It might be a month or two before I switch though.

I appreciate everyone's assistance ;) :D :p

If you're on a budget, go for the Curve 3G (AKA 9300). You can update it to OS6, and I highly recommend you make sure to get a Blackberry with OS6!

I won't go for the 9300 due to the 2mp Camera. I need better quality photos for my unique physique ;) :D :p haha!

Either the Curve 3G (9300) or the Torch (9800) - have had both. Two of my friends had the 8520 and battled with signal constantly.

I love my Torch and it has a much better camera than the Curve 3G

I'd seriously wait for the Bold 9900

Going from a touch screen to a BB keyboard is not a downgrade...

9780 or wait for new one.

The torch is an ok phone but it has some big issues:
-The battery doesn't last a day.
-The screens resolution means only 4 icons on home screen(big issue for me).
-On screen keyboard is too small to use.
-When you open the slider the phone is massively top heavy and all that weight on the slider means it comes loose after a few months.
-Although it has a traditional BB keyboard it is just about completely flat so typing on it not the same.
-It creaks like mad when using the keyboard.

If you absolutely insist on the Torch get it on MTN, free Garmap with live traffic for 2 years.
