Which car has evolved the most in your lifetime ?

This is what my grandfather was driving when I was a kidlet

And then what it would look like today.

The classic looks better...
Also, I'd say that the E-type is the actual predecessor to the F-type, not the XK.

Another somewhat direct comparison that's fairly interesting and that I like is the Merc SL300 Gullwing vs the modern version of the SL and the SLS.

Correct - here is the latest XK

LOL! I agree - the XK 120 must be one of the most beautiful "classically styled" cars I have ever seen - out of interest, just look at the line of the back quarter window - superb!

Most of these new models all look the same old same old... to me they are all looking like variations on a theme type "kit" cars.
Very little of the marque's DNA even present in these shells, never mind evident, in any of these formulaic "stylings".
Yes, these are now all owned by other companies... yes, the focus is on their engine's performance... but this blandness that envelopes these designs lately is saddening.

What is it with these headlight "creations" on cars nowdays? Looking more and more like bad cellphone bling accessories than a vehicle's headlights!

I would still be very comfortable with a new XJ in my garage right now, however! ;) :p

:D

I get a sense that in them good-old days, a car was designed and then built and THEN they tried to sell it.
Nowadays is is more like a car is sold before being built and designed.
Maybe marketing should go back to trying to sell the car AFTER the design and manufacture and not be influential in the design process.

I'm too old school to be cool.

In my opinion that car got better looking the regressed. Pic 3 being its aesthetic peak while the last 4 pics should be erased from the history books.

You can see the generic onset of blandness in those last 4 pics.

Like in this next example ... it progresses from definite JAGUAR to uhm, Nissan / BMW / Aston / Maserati mess with the 3rd concept being truer to the original DNA.

Kinda Was / Is / Should have been.

Diluted, safe and definitely lacking something to set it apart from the rest. Same old same old.

I think Audi as a brand has changed the most dramatically as a whole for me.

They gone through more obvious stages of design chances than anyone else I can think of and more radically as well.

I think about the old Audi 500's and I can hardly believe that was a recent as the 90's.

Yes, for my money - the final concept car which has very strong E Type DNA is the pick of the bunch, and should have been given the nod at some point.

Audis have changed radically in my lifetime, and I have watched them go from little people's cars to the beasts they now are - I like certain aspects of the latest ones - I love the smoothness of the A 5 but that grille, which is trying to tie them back to the original pre war GP cars, just looks out of place and ugly on some of the new ones - the trouble with such a rapid transition is that a 1999 Audi now looks antiquated, as does a mid 2000's one - it ages the car to quickly, and steps away from true classic design.

The F-Type is a beautiful car. What is wrong with you guys?! If I could have any coupe, new or classic, the F-type would probably be it...

I never liked shape 5 or 6 really

If you talking purely on evolution the Germans do it the best.
Mercedes C and S class evolution
BMW 3, 5 and 7 series evolution
VW golf evolution.

I'd choose the 3 series evolution, they kept it modern, suttle kidney changes over the years.
Most of all I don't think BMW have dropped the ball on any of their 3 series cars, they've all been best in class.

Another one that has evolved has been the Honda Civic. It started out as this.

CB450.jpg

They dropped the powertrain from the bike into a car. On the next model they added another two cylinders. A few model tweaks later it ended up like this.
