Which of the following cars cost less to maintain and are more reliable. The Tata indica (2005-2006),Opel corsa (1997-2002),Chevy Spark(2004),FIAT PALIO (2000-2001) or the Renault Clio(2003-2004) models?

I would guess the Corsa to be most reliable. It just depends on how the previous owners looked after the car.

Out of those I'd also say Corsa. Renault is expensive to maintain

Avoid the Renault Clio .. my SO had a 2003 model, and it was plagued with electrical problems, i.e. the electronic coil / ignition system. Renault dealership in Fourways, Jhb, were unable to rectify the problem in the 4+ years they serviced it.

Corsa should be more reliable, and the parts are cheaper and readily available

i see.

INDIA, GERMAN, USA, FRANCE, FRANCE. you decide which engineering piece you want :P

I have a 2000 Fiat Palio, great car, but I must admit the previous owner spent about R23k on it since she bought it. So I probably have a car that's had all the faults driven out by now.

This is a "How long is a piece of string" question.

The answer is impossible to work out without intimate knowledge of each car in the equation.

This thread could go on for another two thousand answers and you still won't have the correct answer.

What do you want to use the car for? How much do you want to spend?

I honestly wouldn't buy any of the cars you listed. :p
Even a city golf (similar size) would be better and cheaper to maintain.
Again, you're looking at oldish 2nd hand cars. Condition and history of the specific car is very important.
Also Google each car and see what is the most common things that break on those models.
All cars eventually break, question is, how often does it break, what does it cost to fix and will you be able to find parts.(and a mechanic that can fix it.)

The big problem with golf is the rate they get stolen as well as your insurance premiums.

Have a look at cars from 90's early 00's that are still on the road. Which one of the above brands do you see?

Opel, Fiat. Especially Opel. Whether you are a fan or not there is no denying Opel's keep going for a long time.

Exact reason I won't touch VW/Audi - hardly old ones on the road (Golf 4 anyone?)
