I have the option between a Mercedes A170 for R55000 or a Renault Modus (R50000). Both are in very good conditions. The mercedes has 180000km and the Renault 100000km.

The reservations about the Mercedes:
High Kms
High Class Brand - pricey parts and service
Heard to fix anything on the engine requires taking out the engine - lots of labour.

The reservations about the Renault:
French car
Parts not manufactured in South Africa - I think
Expensive services and parts

Can anyone of me any insight?

Many thanks

R50k is a tight budget but I would go for a car that was cheaper when it was new so that when you buy it now it is not as old. Suppose it depends on your other requirements in terms of space etc. Example would be a Polo for R50k or so?

Well it does not sound like you can afford the above two cars either, what would you do if there was a serious mechanical failure? That could cost you big then you ware without a car and cash.

http://www.gumtree.co.za/s-cars/manual/page-2/v1c9077a1trp2?pr=40000,60000

There are a few cars on there that are much lower mileage.

Ya i can afford the cars, and both have full service history and recently went through a service and roadworthy, so i dont EXPECT anything to go wrong soon. I've looked on gumtree, but there is no point in me searching in areas where i dont live as its not feasible to drive 1000kms to see a car (often they not as they appear on gumtree). I've checked in my area and do constantly. So thus i have a choice between the above :erm:

Its difficult to find that was recently new and for like 50k, i would LOVE a polo, but none in my area that are under 200000kms. Only requirements are really light on fuel, airbags, and not marie biscuit wheels lol. So consider from the two above?

What area are you in?

From the 2 I would take the Merc. Wife had one as a company car for a few months, does what is supposed to do. Had the Modus as a rental once, didn't impress me too much

Thanks, someone who has actually had both cars wow! Appreciate the answer. But since you didnt own either i doubt you know which is more expensive to run or repair if need be?

Nope, Merc was still under the service plan and the rental could just go back if it had a problem
