Don't know about the Renault but Merc parts are very expensive. I've bought a lot of older Mercs over the years, but only because I know a really good specialist mechanic that specialises in servicing used Mercs who actually repairs a lot of the components a dealership would just replace at horrendous expense. Only buy the Merc if you have a really good non-dealership mechanic who specialises in Mercedes in your area, and preferably take it to him first to find out if he's happy to work on it.
 
Neither. I would try as new as possible within your budget. Why not consider something like a citigolf? Yes it is basic car with no features, but cheap to maintain.
 
Looking at just those two options, go with the Merc. Parts are more readily available, and therefore more convenient and possibly cheaper to repair then the Renault.

There will also be plenty mechanics with a good set of knowledge on Mercs.
 
You've answered yourself, the Merc it is. I don't have a opinion about the french build quality, but the spare parts are rediculous expensive, and scares.

Mercs can go on forever but don't try to go cheap on replacement parts or think you can carry on driving around with problem "x".
 
I know someone with that small Citoen C1 i think, it cost them 15k for new clutch after 45000km, yes 45. Midas or other places didn't sell LUK cluch kits as its imported. In a other instance this Renault small panel vans... The handle broke, the mechanic had to wait 3 weeks for new handle, if it was aVW, you could get hadle sameday at agents or Goldwagon.
Last bit of useless info, here in CPT, some guys decide to buy a model car, (lots of it) and rent it as cheap rentals per day or month.
One set of cars are th VW Beelte, other one is that old Mercs, (that youve got in late 80s) . So i think it must be fairly cheap to maintain, and relaible...
 
Buy the Merc, don't service it with the official dealer.

Find a third party that specializes in Mercedes.
 
Thanks guys...seems like the Merc is the majority opinion... any idea if there is any truth in having to take the whole engine out to replace something small like the starter? (hearsay)
 
In that case, my vote is also the Merc. As someone mentioned, get a good independent indy to service vehicle. In your case, someone that is a merc specialist.
 
Merc for me as well. It has been out for a while so there will be plenty mechs who have worked on similar cars and parts will be available.
