I am looking at the following CPU's:

Intel i7 - 930 LGA 1366 2.8 GHz

or

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T

I am looking specifically at "future proofing" because the Intel sockets almost change monthly and Intel's motherboards is much more expensive than AMD's.

well for what do you use your computer?
I'd recommend the i7 for gaming and photoshop etc.
If you need the extra cores for video encoding then the 1090T

I'd say the 930 is definitely currently a better CPU (MAY differ when aps make efficient use of 6 physical cores)

But, in hindsight, AMD is more likely to still use the same socket in two years' time.

Lastly: You mentioned that AMD boards are cheaper, but it's even more so when you add USB3 and SATA3 to the board, then the Intel's become insanely expensive.

Good point

Nope, bulldozer is a new socket. Although some CPU's may have limited functionality allowing them to work on AM3. So neither AMD nor Intel will be future proof in a way that will allow another CPU to be popped in two years from now.

Stay away from intel, they are corrupt and do not need more money. AMD offers the best value for money if look at the total cost and performance of your system (board & CPU).

Definitely the 1090T.

Performance of both is so high that you should look at other metrics. The cheaper board should allow you get more ram or spend the money elsewhere on your pc.

Another consideration is that you really don't want a monopoly. Intel's market share is too high. Rather get the AMD and support the competition.

I think AMDs current gen CPUs are quite fail from a price performance point when compared to Intel with gaming..
When bulldozer and sandy bridge come out, we'll see if there is any improvement on this.

I do agree that you should look at the total cost of your system..
On average there is about R300 difference between the 930 and 1090T which will be blown on mobo (+some more) for sure.. then you need to decide on how much RAM you want.. Which is also about R300 more (6GB over 4GB)..

The performance will most probably be unnoticed.. BUT Intel is carrying over 1136 socket to next year, so there will still be bigger and better CPUs to pop in if you want to, or the current ones will get cheaper... Either way there is some form of upgrade path still..
