Which distro for netbook?

If you are going with a gnome based distro then you might look into getting as much use of your limited screen resolution as possible by configuring the panels, themes and fonts.

I have:
* Removed the bottom panel and moved the top one down to the bottom (you can auto-hide this as well, I do not like auto-hide, but the option is there)
* Shrunk the panel size and font size to the smallest size allowed (if I'm not mistaken it is either 6 or 6.5 pt for fonts)
* Resized the fonts system wide to smallest available
* Removed default gnome applets on the panel and installed a "one-button-does-all" menu applet
* Removed all unnecessary applets --> https://ubuntugenius.wordpress.com/...from-indicator-applet-in-ubuntus-system-tray/
* Dropped Firefox for Chrome

You can further then look for a theme that suits you, disable or minimize borders on windows, etc. This will give you significantly more workspace than before.

I use standard Ubuntu 10.04 with autohide on top and bottom bars. I also have an autohide docky on the left, but will prolly dump that as it's a bit gimmicky. Panel sizes and fonts are all default. I am running FF4 with a .fonts.conf file to fix the font rendering and hinting - I also have Chrome 10 installed but much prefer FF.

Oh yes, I must add that I use my netbook every single working day...

I thought that this thread has died a long time ago.

I've installed Fedora, which worked quite well. Then installed Fedora 15 to see what gnome 3 was like. I liked gnome 3, but the daily updates to the testing repo frustrated me. The update frustration convinced me to install something smaller, so I'm currently busy making my Arch-Openbox install look pretty.

There is also the Orta theme for Openbox.

Just got myself an Acer Aspire One ZG8, planning on installing Natty on the weekend. Hopefully will have the memory upgraded to 2gig by then.

Does anyone know if the 3G works for this netbook under _buntu ?

Just installed on my Netbook (same as yours) - totally blown away! Best distro ever. Installed the normal Ubuntu RC (no netbook edition yet for the Atom). Very very fast.

Also you can only install a 1GB Ram chip in the ZG8 - it has 512MB embedded and the MB only supports a total of 2GB. I tried a 2GB chip and it did not register, threw in a 1GB and what an improvement.

Yes - Gnome support is the best out of any OS. Just plug in, go to Network Manager and select new mobile network (your device will actually be listed) and then follow the 3 step wizard.

Have got 3 different modems and they all work without a single hack.
