Which Distro to choose

I agree with ponder....Linux Mint is the best for beginners. Easy to use as it is based on Ubuntu and media playback + java and flash works out of the box so no need to fiddle with it.

Linux Mint (based on ubuntu) or Ubuntu.

Are you nuts!? We should hook him up with Gentoo. :p:D

Aaaaaaanyway, back on topic:
Things to think about..
-Do you like spending hours into the night browsing forums to modify your OS?
-What do you plan on using your OS for? Is it just for something to do admin on, or do you want to take Linux out for a spin and see what it can do?
-How fond are you of typing commands in Terminal? :p (I find it funny to see how many people are scared of typing "sudo apt-get install vlc")
-What's your PC's setup?

*Side Note*
I'm playing around with linux to see what it's all about by following the idea that the best way to learn how to swim is to get into the water...

So, I have 3 HDDs in my PC for this method...
one for Windows, one for my Backups & stuff, one for all my Linux partitions. (20GB per partition is already overkill). And you can install them in such a way that they share the same settings, so when you change the style of one linux installation, it "updates" the rest.

When I get home, I'll be adding Linux Mint and Fedora (I still need to get my hands on OpenSuse).

Another really good idea... get a backup PC that can browse the internet. It's really hard to fix your PC without any help from Forumites. And trust me, Linux gives you the power to break your PC in ways you've never heard of. :p

/vote Ubuntu because it works and are not so difficult as your first linux os.

Just run it from the LiveCD first to see that it works nicely with your hardware...once that is cool then feel free to install either inside windows via wubi or a proper install.

Mint's STD interface is  (Installed it last night)
But... the minute I get my internet again it will change! :D

lol I agree. Not to mention the brown of Ubuntu - bleh! But there are some pretty nifty themes out there. Do a search for "infinity theme linux" in google and you will get about 9 themes thats pretty cool. Or, do a search for the "HP linux theme". You can see a screenshot of that on my profile page. Also pretty nice.

The Ubuntu layout and stuff is awesome. And my current theme is a mix of 3 others. I'll post a screenshot sometime. The cool thing is that my Ibex and Jaunty runs from the same home folder, so what I change on the one side, changes on the other. Mint on the other hand has it's own little space on my HDD.

I have both Ubuntu and Kubuntu on different machines, and I like the way that most things just work with Ubuntu. Case in point would be the viewing of camera RAW files - I installed gThumb on Ubuntu and it worked straight after install. I've not been able to get any of the KDE viewers to open RAW files. Nautilus with external storage devices also works better the KDE's plasmoid "device mounter"

I use DigiKam, which reads RAW images nicely. But I find it best to convert them to TIFF files, which do the trick and can be read by anything.
