I've been looking around and reading reviews for a while now and have decided that I want in on the Android party. :)

I've currently got my heart set on the Samsung i9000 Galaxy -- I was sold within seconds of looking at the screen hehe .

It just seems now that because of HTC releasing the Desire White, which is available at only R135pm on Vodacom (Weekender) and has similar specs (minus screen ), that the i9000 seems ridiculously overpriced in comparison, with a R2000 pay-in on the same contract...

I'm guessing it's an issue with old stock vs. new stock, where both HTC and Samsung have managed to drop production costs over time, but Vodacom who most likely bought their i9000 stock a while ago is reluctant to sell it off at a more reasonable price. :(

So, any insider information is welcome -- should I go for the Desire, should I wait another month or two for the Galaxy's price to come down a bit, or should I wait/go for something else completely :D

Last question -- what's the branding and update delivery like from the various service providers? I want to vomit every time I see the Vodafone intro when I boot up my Nokia 5800XM  (Though I must say, I'm pleased that I still get updates 2 years after I bought it)

Thanks in advance for any info!

I'd take the GSII, but its all down to what suits you. :)

You like paying iPhone prices for a mobile phone?

Look, it's gonna be a funky phone, but the HTC Sensation will cost half of that and give you HTC Sense 3.0 UI, which is a bridge too far for the Crapwiz UI.

And you won't have a plastic phone. :)

OK guys, I feel I should mention that I am in fact a student on a budget!

It's pretty much between:
> HTC Desire on Vodacom Weekender (R135pm, 120min off-peak)
> Samsung Galaxy on CellC (R280pm, 100minutes any-time, 250MB data)

The RBM deals look good on paper, but not being able to remove the Red-Bull software and being a guinea-pig for a new product doesn't appeal to me. I'm just not keen to buy a cellphone contract from an energy-drink company I guess; Red-Bull should stick to what they're good at ;)

The Desire seems like the better deal but I'm still in love with the Galaxy, so we'll see what happens... At least I'm pretty sure I won't be disappointed either way :)

Can anyone comment on the various service-providers' branding on the phones and how willing/able they are to provide updates on time? Or would you guys just recommend going for hacked firmware anyway, nullifying the issue?

Rather buy yourself a Samsung microwave and choose HTC for all your phone & tablet needs.

Go for the Samsung.
HTC support in SA is absolutely atrocious.

Go Samsung, the SGS got its 2.3.2 update in Europe over the weekend, so it will be out sooner in SA than the Desire's

Thanks for all the input guys, will be ordering my Samsung any day now :D

My Desire HD doesn't have any MTN branding.

Why not look at the Samsung Galaxy S II or the Wildfire S if you want something cheaper? Both should be out next month.

Simple, look for the Android phone be it Samsung/HTC that has the best hardware and form factor that you can afford and work with. Then root+flash a clean Android rom onto it.

Sorted :)

Hello again, would just like to inform you guys that I've been playing with my new Samsung Galaxy S for a few days now and I'm pretty much blown away.. What a device!

The things I love the most so far are:
-- The 4" SuperAMOLED screen... Nothing I've ever seen comes close to looking this good. Sure the text gets a bit fuzzy when it's too small, but it really doesn't matter. iPhone 4 users can keep their extra 20 pixels :P

-- Swype keyboard

-- Using Skifta to stream music from my NAS over wi-fi and being able to view my SGS as a media server on my PS3 also via wi-fi and Skifta. (Although PS3 can't play the 720p videos and everything is a bit slower than it could be, it still works :D)

--The excellent market-place.. everything free, which is cool and not cool, because a lot of premium apps are unavailable :/ (btw is the paid-for market coming soon? How else can you get paid-for apps?)

There are also some things I don't like:
-- Battery: Mine hasn't pulled a full 12 hrs yet, although with the abuse I've been giving it, that's probably normal :P I'll have to see how it is for everyday use before I comment.

-- The swipe to unlock thing: Seems like a bit of a chore to do each time.. The iPhone/iPod touch method is better IMO.

-- The power button is on the wrong side of the phone... Should have swapped it with the volume rocker! :P

-- It sounds like a spring is loose somewhere - When it vibrates or even when I tap the back cover or press the menu key there is a little buzz somewhere.. Is this normal? I hope it's not a manufacturing fault :/ It's not like it's a huge problem, the phone just doesn't feel as solid as it could have.

Overall I'm extremely happy though.. My girlfriend is getting very jealous :D

Oh there is another thing I could live without -- The UI: It's not that it's bad, it's just that when someone looks at my phone they go: "Oh, so it's like a cheaper iPhone copy.." Which I have to admit is true, at first glance it's very apparent who Samsung were taking notes from when they designed the UI..

Freakin' Apple fan-boys though... Is there any way to shut them up?

(PS: That question is actually more practical than you may think -- What do you say to someone who says an SGS is an iPhone knock-off?)

Come back to me when you dont have to jailbreak your device to actually use it :)
My answer:
Honestly, if you buy a phone purely on looks, you doing it wrong and should stay with your iPhone. I use the device as an extension of me, be it the ability to customize my UI to fit me and my environment. Be it Multitasking (able to put people on hold and answer a Skype call), or be it media needs (able to copy music/documents from any pc). Its not a fashion ornament that says look I am a sheep, its a production device that I paid money for to increase my productivity. Who cares if it looks like an cheap knock-off of an iPhone, because it can do a hell of a lot more than one.

/waits for iPhone flames
