Which Droid ? Which Contract ? GO!

Oh there is another thing I could live without -- The UI: It's not that it's bad, it's just that when someone looks at my phone they go: "Oh, so it's like a cheaper iPhone copy.." Which I have to admit is true, at first glance it's very apparent who Samsung were taking notes from when they designed the UI..

Freakin' Apple fan-boys though... Is there any way to shut them up?

Just root the phone and install an AOSP Gingerbread ROM. You get a more distinctively "Android"-style UI, and an upgrade to the latest version of Android in the process.

Of course, I'm a fan of vanilla Android, in part because the style is more utilitarian and less like iOS. Some people don't like that, and prefer skins like TouchWiz or Sense because they're supposedly prettier. But it's an option to consider.

OK guys, I feel I should mention that I am in fact a student on a budget!

It's pretty much between:
> HTC Desire on Vodacom Weekender (R135pm, 120min off-peak)
> Samsung Galaxy on CellC (R280pm, 100minutes any-time, 250MB data)

The RBM deals look good on paper, but not being able to remove the Red-Bull software and being a guinea-pig for a new product doesn't appeal to me. I'm just not keen to buy a cellphone contract from an energy-drink company I guess; Red-Bull should stick to what they're good at ;)

The Desire seems like the better deal but I'm still in love with the Galaxy, so we'll see what happens... At least I'm pretty sure I won't be disappointed either way :)

Can anyone comment on the various service-providers' branding on the phones and how willing/able they are to provide updates on time? Or would you guys just recommend going for hacked firmware anyway, nullifying the issue?

You obviously don't know what you talking about. Just flash it was default/oem firmware and all Red Bull software is gone

Come back to me when you dont have to jailbreak your device to actually use it :)
My answer:
Honestly, if you buy a phone purely on looks, you doing it wrong and should stay with your iPhone. I use the device as an extension of me, be it the ability to customize my UI to fit me and my environment. Be it Multitasking (able to put people on hold and answer a Skype call), or be it media needs (able to copy music/documents from any pc). Its not a fashion ornament that says look I am a sheep, its a production device that I paid money for to increase my productivity. Who cares if it looks like an cheap knock-off of an iPhone, because it can do a hell of a lot more than one.

/waits for iPhone flames

Dude I agree 100%! Very well said

@Linoman -- You're right, I didn't think of that... Not going to give back my SGS at this stage though :P

Meh.. I only just got the phone, so I've still got stars over my eyes! Give me a year or so :D

SGS2 has better specs that my laptop so it would probably make sense to replace that first. Besides, it's not like SGS2 has any more must-have features when compared to SGS... Not for me at least.
