Hiya guys looking for a genie
Portable around 7kva
It needs to be able to run a few hair dryers and a few other things for my chicks work.
So portable petrol or diesel.
Decent quality
Need input please guys.
Looking on takealot as I have a lot fo ebucks
Thanks

I know many say heating items is a bad idea with inverters /batteries

But running a generator is a pricey affair in petrol costs

So if you can i would say do the kill-a-watt route first and measure how much they really use

Or measure the power usage over a 4hr period by reading the meter and 4hrs again

Before Pulling the trigger
With enough runtime you pay in petrol cost the inverter and batts cost

There is a reason why you can always find second hand generators for sale

Hair dryers are inverter killers and normally run easily at 1Kw a pop, esp with heating elements.
There is a reason my wife was told to not let that thing near the inverter plugs :D

So good luck with that.

To be honest honest there is nothing i haven't run on mine

Edit: i told my wife run what you want to run, she is very headache/migraine prone so heavy wet hair no thanks

Doing regularly the washing machine ,hair dryer, kettle stove, oven, microwave(this one is the heavy one that stuffs around with the 2 heating devices rule)

Not so regularly tumble dryer on the hot setting

It isn't what you run that drains the batteries quick it is how long you do it

ie everybody gets a fit if you put a kettle on battery

Use the gas stove they say

And yet the kettle only runs 4-5 minutes and burns exactly the same as what your tv+dstv+internet uses in an hour for that 5 minutes

So yes it depends on his use case if it costs him 1kw then they can have 3 hair dryers with a runtime of 1.5hrs each

So 4 x22min sessions per hair dryer per 4hr shedding

If they are heavier on power ie 2kw that means 4x 11min sessions per hair dryer

And naturally however many at a time that fits the inverter

But yea that is ignoring the other items ie POS etc

If that fits their use case
Lets say the generator costs them R200-250 (conservative estimate)per day for 2 load shedding sessions, 148-185 days of usage like this loadshedding then they would have burned the cost of inverter and batteries just as petrol expense

Now with the saving after that they can get more batteries so that for the petrol expense of a year they can now for years have backup power at no expense

Then buying some panels you get that money all back the next 5-6 years

So normally people run a generator for a little while and this dawns on them with petrol slips, then they advertise it on gumtree

Can you give us a breakdown of what appliances need to be run and for what period of time? For example - a hairdryer runs at between 2500w and 3000w for around 5 to 15 minutes depending on length of hair... what other things need to be run and at what wattage?

Plus anything over 1kw would not be considered portable for the women except for that boer tannie that will klap you into yesterday , naturally model with wheels changes that and electric start is a must if you do go this route

when the battery fails get a lifep04 replacement

Agree, my genny, is 90kilos, and my wife cannot move it, especially when it is full.

To @marine1, I have an Adenorff macafric branded genny, ticks all the boxes except it is not on Takealot.

It is my backup to my solar setup, and is powerful enough to run the whole house.

Yea many keep it for this purpose without the constant petrol expense

It is way cheaper than what it would cost in batteries/extra panels for that last 1% of eskom independence

As long as you have a lifep04 battery in it , so that in can start when you need it

Ans naturally you have to run it lets say once a month to prevent the carbs from gunking up (if you don't drain them )

Anybody that had/has a bike with carbs will immediately know what i mean

Especially if they have carbs that is a fuss to get off

Here is looking at you honda v4 , love the sound and torque

But damn cleaning carbs on an nc30 is a slept

Luckily riding at least once a month isn't hard (except when the tank rust repair is underway now it has to get a drip bottle on the fuel line, old age is kak not just for us)

I have a good friendship with the girl that cuts my hair, she owns her own salon. She fscking cries about the cost of fuel for her generator. All those hairdryers and geysers for constant hot water etc.

Anyway, this Husqvarna would be a solid buy. Lekker big fuel tank etc. The Yamaha I have takes like 5-7 liters and it goes quickly. The Yamaha also goes for around R20k.

Or swing past your local lawn mower shop/dealership and get whatever they sell. They often don't want to work/service anything not bought from them or that they are not agents for.

Specifically hair dryers running for maybe 30 min ar a time.
Not more than 1 at a time.
Maybe some TVs at times ?

Which one is it ? I'm looking at a 7kva unit maybe 3000 watts I think?

You gotta check the different model ie most tend to run most economical in the mid rev range (salt generalisation)

It depends how many hair dryers you want to run at the same time

Ie this one is 7.5kva /6800w

The bigger ones tend to have bigger motors so would cost more per hour

But naturally you don't want to run a generator at max or on idle

Unless you go for inverter generators:

They tend to ramp up as your consumption increases.

7kva is not 3000 watts, this is a 6.5kva which is 5kw and is the one that I own. Ran Edit: Can run fridges/tvs/desktops with no issue:
