I'm looking to get a 8-port gigabit switch for a SOHO and am considering either the TP-Link TL-SG1008D (R359 from Uniterm ex vat) or Intellinet 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch (R399 from Esquire ex vat).

From my limited knowledge they seem much of a muchness. Any specific reason to go for one over the other?

EDIT: Corrected to reflect I'm in fact looking for a switch.

So you want a router, but you're linking us to two switches?

Sorry, my bad. I meant switch... It's the same thing to us non-networking plebs. (And yes, I do know the difference).

EDIT: Is there a way to edit the thread title?

In South Africa even the information superhighway has potholes on it.

"in it" not on it. I have never seen a pothole on a road only in a road

Title - no.

These SOHO products are very similiar and work automatically (no configuration required). Intellinet is more energy efficient, using IEEE 802.3az to adjust power.

Besides, of power saving you need to answer the following questions:

- Do you have large LAN with number of switches and plenty MAC addresses, exceeding 4K?

- Do you use Jumbo frames?

Intellinet seems to be more capable, but specification lacks of backbone speed.

Well, in Africa anything is possible. In any case, a road shouldn't have pot-holes anywhere near it.

No. There are 4 wired workstations, a bunch of wireless devices running off two acces points (one 802.11g and one 802.11n) as well as two printers, both of which are only 100Mbps anyway.
Do you use Jumbo frames?

I don't even know what they are.

Jumbo frames, lot of readings, start from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumbo_frame
Very useful when transfering large files.
Even if you don't care about Jumbo frames (who knows, you might change your mind in future), I would recommend Intellinet due to energy saving feature.
