XFX GeForce 7950GT 512MB... Or ABIT ATi Radeon X850 Pro...

Both nVidia and ATI lost some browny points with me in the last couple of years due to various reasons... But I don't have much choice - it's either ATI or nVidia...

So... Both are semilar (ATI is 256MB though), both are similarly priced... The nVidia seems to be better speced, but why would a better speced card cost just about the same as a lower end card?

Thoughts, suggestions, etc? I'm looking at about R4K to spend here... So both of these cards seems to be pretty spot on for me price wise...

Geez, comparing a 7950GTX to a X850 Pro is like comparing a Lamborghini Murcielago to a Tata Indica. No competition, I have an X850XT, its a nice card but its getting dated. ie. not SM3 support.

True, but rather like at an X1950 or equivalent if your going the ATI route.

Argh... Which is WAY over my budget...

I have to agree NOW however, yes the X850 does seem a bit 'old' and 'out dated'... But it's also affordable ;) I guess comparing the X850 to the nVidia wasn't the right thing as they obviously are in two completely different leagues...

Will have to check the nVidia vs. the X1950 now, but yes - I'll definately rather go for the ATI then... Only question is, how much of my soul do I have to sell to get the additional money this requires!

Well regardless of your budget, if you buy an X850 you'll be pissing the money against a wall cos its life expectancy is coming to an end.

Um no, its no for every problem a game has with an nvidia chip, one exists with another game on an ATI chip.

If you want to fight with Catalyst drivers that tell you that no VGA driver is installed when you are trying to install one, go right ahead. :P

But seriously though, the 7950GT is better than the X850 in every single possible way. As you have been told, buying an X850 right now is throwing money down the drain.

Hmm,

My supplier is checking stock now for a ATI X1950 Pro (256MB). I just don't have the 6K-7K that is required for the 512MB models... So I'll more than likely just go with this then...

Thanks guys.

BTW - The X9150 Pro is about 3K5 which is a rather good price for what I am prepared to spend on this...

yup wait for may when nvidia's cheaper line of vga card are out and ATI might have their cards ready which would mean nvidia releasing an even more powerful card than the 8800gtx and reducing the price of an 8800gtx

buy now and you'll be wishing you had listened to the ppl on the forum by may

Hmm... Thing is, the new cards will all be based on DX10 and the whole Vista thing...

I've *heard* (ala rumour) that DX10 will be Vista ONLY.... *IF* that is true, what's the point of buying a card optimised for DX10, when I can't load DX10 on XP? I'm definately not going to go the Vista route any time soon...

Either way, Rectron doesn't have stock, the card is on back order now... I guess I have at least a couple of days to a week to think about this.

Nope, DX10 is not Vista only, and in 3 months you will be kicking yourself when your brand new card is worthless.

You HAVE to wait DX10. Even the low level DX10 cards will have a great advantage over current DX9.0c cards.

Argh... Which is WAY over my budget...

Where are you getting these prices from? Its scary that you are comparing a X850 to the 7950GT, they are no where near in the same price range.

The X1950Pro costs R2300 at any normal place. The X1950XTX however is around R4000. Exactly what you want to spend.
