Which handgun do you recommend for EDC?

One more thing - you will hear and read the 'I want a hammer gun, not striker because it is safer, I trust it more, or whatever other reason' - modern striker fired handguns are as safe as the hammer guns, with fewer pointy bits, so do not make that your deciding factor.

Safer, in my opinion.

Carry concealed.
Never let anyone know you are armed.
Saw a prick of note carrying a Colt 45 openly on his belt yesterday.
All you become is a target.

Concealed is the only way to carry. You legally aren't allowed to carry open.

On a related note, is anyone else pissed off at the "wheelchair sniper"? You aren't allowed to use a firearm to protect property, ONLY lives. And you can't carry openly.

That week was a different set of rules.

It is what it is.

You can buy any handgun on any section/across multiple sections as long as you can motivate for the licence.

For Sec 15/16 this means joining a club, and for Sec 16 it also means uploading shoots on a yearly basis (I believe)

Some advice for free - when it comes to guns: one is none, and two is one.
Overkill is also a thing

Proper untrained ignorance.

Revolvers can and do jam, and when they do, it is normally off the the gun smith, if you are still alive.
To clear a jam in a semi-auto pistol, if you train, as you should, is really very quick, and together with available round count can make all the difference.
Yeah, there's a very good reason the FBI stopped using revolvers and swapped everyone over to pistols in the 80's. Mainly to do with reloading times, but in the same vein ammo capacity.

This is like asking is the Ocean is full of water...

This depends on you nature.

How active are you regarding firearm usage and maintenance?
EDC is fine. Can you use said firearm when necessary? Will it function when you need it too? Will you service it correctly and frequently?

High stress situational use, Get a Revolver. if it jams just pull trigger again.
Pistol is, Mag out. clear the stored round. Mag in, Chamber. squeeze and bang. I'm lucky Georg made a cycle whereby I can clear the chamber without removing the mag.
The 70`s mailed and wants its advice back.

In my sport shooting career, I have seen many pistols fail. But when over 99% of firearms used are pistols, that it to be expected. Most failures could be handled with a tap-rack-assess. Even under powered reloaded ammo was not a show stopper. The guy just had to manually cycle after every shot. The only permanent issue was a takedown lever spring failing, as it caused the slide to come off the frame. And he could buy a spare and install it himself.

I have seen a single revolver with issues. It didn't like the brand new factory ammo. The guy was lucky if he could get one shot off in every 6. The cylinder kept getting misaligned, meaning no shooty for him.

Revolvers are junk for EDC.

So does this mean that you could potentially get a handgun and a shotgun for self defence but you would have to apply for the licenses separately?

For self defence, section 13,you can license either a handgun or a shotgun. If you want additional handgun or shotguns, you would have to license them on section 15 (occasional sport shooter) or section 16 (dedicated sport shooter).

Every firearm is licensed separately, as the licenses are linked to the serial number of the firearm.

Thanks for the clarification.

The one on the balcony holding the air rifle while seated in a wheelchair, that one?

Firstly it wasn't clear it was an air rifle (so pointing any gun is illegal - and he wasn't keeping it in a safe direction at all times) - and secondly what was the plan? To discharge an air rifle in a built-up area (which is also illegal)?

He sent the wrong signals when it comes to responsible gun ownership, AND he unnecessarily painted himself as a target for bad guys who wouldn't just be packing air rifles.

Yes rules are basically the same, need to treat it like a firearm, was just asking if it was the same guy, though there was maybe another one

Yeah I think he was the only one, on top of that Spar as I recall lol. What a place to make your last stand, but he might have had a personal connection to it. I'm reasonably confident a lot of the guys milling around under him had concealed guns ... which again raises all sorts of legal dilemmas. Let's say a mob approached them with pangas, and refused to back down ... unless someone in the gun crowd was actively being attacked, on what grounds would the rest do anything with their guns? They could escape the confrontation by just running in the opposite direction.

...

Most pistol failures I've experienced is due to user (me) error and directly related to too little range time. A grip that's too weak, or a thumb that brushes the mag release were my main problems in the beginning.

HK P30, a joy to EDC and easy to conceal. It was easier than expected to find mags for it. It is time to start looking for a spring kit, though, just in case. IMO that's the main thing if you buy something less common on the market - try to buy the spares you're likely to need before you actually need them.

If you want to make your EDC life easy, get a Glock in 9mmP, whether you like them or not. Just get over it. The level of support and accessories is simply without peer in SA. The Toyota of guns. A dealer everywhere, parts freely available, and just about everyone can work on them.

Some people simply can't get their head around Glocks because they 'are too mainstream' and ugly (I like the way they look, but that's beside the point) . I say keep your other brands of (in the SA context) guns for sport shooting. You are going to kick yourself when you try and find a new holster, or a set of springs for your less popular gun. (Good luck getting a Phlster pro, or Tenicor velo holster for your CZ)

In SA, CZ comes close, but your choices of holsters etc are still very limited. The first gun just about any accessory company manufactures for is a G19, and then they see from there how it goes.

IMHO as things stand now, I would go for a G48 with a shield arms 15 round mag. That thinness will make a solid difference when you carry.

I have a G19, but it can become a but cumbersome. I would have loved a G43x or G48.

Edit: I would also be seriously tempted by a Sig P365, lack of support or not.

I went to a range and shot the G43 and Sig Sauer P365.

Both the lady and I found the Sig more comfortable with less recoil, we both had better accuracy with it as well (first time shooting for her and first time for me at a range, so don't read much into that.)

For me, the Sig was the nicer gun and the one I want to get. I'm a small guy so concealing a full-sized 9mm is a bit tricky, I find the compacts to be easier. For a guy your size I don't think that would be an issue though.

The Glock also has plastic sights which are apparently replaced quite rapidly my many owners. The Sig comes with better sights, including night sights so a benefit there. Also has a larger mag and slightly longer handle which would probably fit your hand better.
