Which handgun do you recommend for EDC?

There is that of course. (I have DSS and never looked back)

But if someone is asking about a Taurus as a carry gun.... maybe not a dedicated sport shooter. YET.......

Ok so for anyone interested in the costs, I just paid the R610 new membership joining fee to Natshoot.co.za and also paid the further R400 fee to immediately be able to access the PDF training guide (110 pages long!) and range target for the Dedicated Sports Shooter status. The goal now is to get this before I apply for my firearm license ... and if all goes well, I then have some freedom with it.

The only thing I'm kicking myself about now is when I did my competency I only did the pistol competency, and I now wish I'd at least done the semi-auto rifle and shotgun competencies too. Still, pistols are the primary thing I'm interested in, so can't say it's the worst thing. So long as the DSS unlocks the ability to get more than one pistol and unlimited ammo, then I say happy days :)

I got a good deal at wildman end of last year for all 4 standards.

It's not the money that bothers me as much as I'm not waiting another year for those competencies. Not now. Later once I'm in this lifestyle a bit more maybe lol.

Look what's happening in Ukraine. In a genuine war situation, the State just hands out automatic rifles to any citizens lol, regardless of training.

It's for fun. I was in the same boat as you, but my competency applications for shotgun and rifle are going in next week when my DFO is back from holiday. I also bought an AK for a decent price, but I'll only see it in 2023 I'm guessing.

Rofl, bought an AK for fun. Ok steady on now, JZ. I'm definitely not using one of those in an urban environment, I couldn't stand killing the neighbour's baby by accident. Once you get hold of it, I'll be kinda interested to hear where you take it. Not sure how many ranges in the city would accept a rifle that big.

As I've said before, we mostly use outside long ranges that have exclusive-use areas.

I can see the default internationally is the Glock 19 Gen 5, but there seem to be constant stock shortages in South Africa.

If you prefer striker fire: Glock 19.
If you want an external hammer: CZ P07
Got the CZ. Wish I saved for the glock instead. (Personal opinion)
Worth it to wait out a temporary supply issue. You will carry the FA for a good lifetime. So don't let a "we don't have stock now" make you get something else.
Glock has a MASSIVE following globally. Meaning, you will always be able to get spare parts, gear and other performance upgrades.
 
Awesome!! As far as I could figure; there's a 24hrs delay between the SMS and the update on the SAPS website, which apps like Where's my App and the Gunr one scrape

Edit: so you decided what blaster to get yet?

Something interesting: Where's My App doesn't show that approval yet. So that implies there is a delay between the real-time systems and the statuses shown on the SAPS website (and its API).

Yeah SAPS systems update at 7pm or something, you will see the update later tonight/tomorrow
