In fact, ATA is very alive, becasue SATA is ATA. PATA is what is dead.

Not just yet - there are still too few SATA opticals on the market to really kill PATA.
I just hope - when PATA really does kick the bucket - that the mobo manfuacturers will use the (physical) space the PATA connectors use to whack a bunch of SATAs in there. 6 SATAs doesn't cut it, IMO. 14 is more like it.

Well if you look at most retailers online,you will see they usually have many many more SATA drives than PATA ones these days.

But im still using PATA for now, I never really meant to say its dead, thats what he said I was just rewriting it. But it will be dead soonish in any case.

Agreed. With SATA peripherals coming out soon 6 just won't be enough.

I'm a Seagate fan all the way - never had a failure in over 10 years but I've seen plenty of WD and Deathstar disks fail.
The only non-Seagate disk I have in operation at the moment is a 400GB MyBook (external USB) and that's because Seagate don't seem to make anything in that form factor.

The sweet spot in hard drive prices seems to be about the 300GiB range at the moment.
R 1053.36 (incl. VAT) for a 320GB SATA Seagate disk from PC Palace in Centurion.
That works out to R 3.30 per GB as opposed to R4.21 per GB for the 160GB disk.

Well those old PATA slots take up a lot of space, should be able to fit another six in around there.

So there are going to be SATA optical drives? I never knew that..

Yep, thats the on im getting, plus its 16MB cache for that price compared to the 8mb cache on the 160GB.

And anyway, the bigger the harddrive the faster and cheaper it is. SO why not look at 320gig, or at least 250, it will be quite a bit faster.

Have one. Fast good, but started making a funny noise a few days ago, sort of grinding..dirt?. Switched off computer to do a swap with old backup, before it really crashes, SMART does not complain tho? Cannot find backup..need another new one to ghost before I can send back for exchange. System was off for a few days started up today due to emergency and NOISE IS GONE??? makes me worry a bit!

OMW!! That exact same thing happened to mine! Didn't even spin up for a few days, then one day just started working agian.

But i'm still gonna try and swop mine out, just don't trust it anymore.


Anyways, i'd still go for a Seagate.

But its 100% more space and alot more performance too.

Its worth it but if you dont have the cash like I so often dont, then just get the 160GB Seagate. If however you can scar together a few hundred more, then its a very worthwhile place to spend your cash. You will run out of space pretty soon, im always surprised at how quickly my space goes.. depends what you use it for I guess.
