Seagate because of reliability, silence and last but not least longest warrenty :D

Have never had issues with seagate. Their Sata drives are a bit louder than their pata drives when you access them, but I can live with that.

WD: Have had quite a few die on me and also heard of a lot dying. They have lost my trust.

Hitachi: Last one I had was just plain bloody loud! Loud zinging noise when it starts to spin :/

Seagate is great for the 5 year warranty.. Im getting a 320GB seagate in a few weeks.

but Western Digital is good too, I'd choose between those two. Hitatchi was supposed to be great, but I've heard alot of people complain about them dieing and they dont perform as well as far as i remember.

Seagate is great for reliability, noise level and heat etc..
To check performance go to www.storagereview.com

looks like seagate it is thanks allot for all the info.
Just need to wait for digital planet to get some more stock since I have a 10% discount.

What about a Seagate Barracuda SATA II 250GB 7200rpm 16MB Cache Hard Disk Drive? I paid round R800 for mine...not sure what the cost now? Its like 90Gb more space and faster!:D

Have one. Fast good, but started making a funny noise a few days ago, sort of grinding..dirt?. Switched off computer to do a swap with old backup, before it really crashes, SMART does not complain tho? Cannot find backup..need another new one to ghost before I can send back for exchange. System was off for a few days started up today due to emergency and NOISE IS GONE??? makes me worry a bit!

Thats weird. I've got mine for a few months now. No porbs. i have a Western Digital 80Gb IDE drive as well. Just for my MP3's and movies. No problems there either, but I would like to change it as well for a SATA II.

i have 2x250gb 16mb western digital hard drives in raid 0.........havent had any problems with them.......i bought them cos they were cheap compared to competitors a few months ago and have 16mb cache..........i should have considered warranty:p

WD's are fine when they behave, but I've read of 3 cases where the new 250's crashed in less than 3 months after purchase.

I've used a 60Gb Seagate for 5 years now and added 2 SATA300's this year. They're too excellent for words. I have heard that the single-platter 80Gb and 160Gb units are the best choice.

I've got three Seagate drives ATM. Two 80Gig ones running in RAID0 plus a 250Gig one for storage (had this one for more than a year now).

Unless you're thinking of going for the Raptor series from WD rather go with Seagate.

Seagate is a good make
ATA is dead, go for SATAII
16Mb should be a bit better than 8Mb versions
Also look for NLQ drives, bit more expensive, but higher quality than desktop hdd's
and if you can afford it the 10 000rpm hdd's :D

Perhaps 16Mb cache in a RAID-ed fileserver will make a difference, but home users won't really notice much difference between 16 and 8Mb.

Secondly, if you're referring to NCQ, can you clarify why they're "higher quality"?

In fact, ATA is very alive, becasue SATA is ATA. PATA is what is dead.

NLQ? Do you mean NCQ? Anyway, NCQ drives may be better but they are actually a bit slower is raw speed with big files. Doesnt matter much though, HDD performance is often unnoticeable. And a NCQ drive is almost exactly the same as a normal "desktop" drive. Unless im confused and something like NLQ really exists.
