Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a vehicle for around R160k. Preferably a modern hatch. I've been looking at the Renault Clio but the interior is questionable. Also looked at the new Opel Corsa 1.0T Essentia. Hoping to pick up something like a demo for this price. Mazda 2 is nice but more pricey.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks for your input.

Thanks stroller. What did you end up getting?

On Thursday I drove out of the Suzuki showroom in a white Swift 1.2GL manual.
I can give you a hundred reasons why I decided to buy it and I can give a hundred reasons why I should have bought something else.
AND ALL WILL BE VALID!

I think that I made the correct choice for a new car but if R160,000 is a criteria for 2014/5 models then great confusion reins.
There simply are just so many other attractive options and each one does have a compelling reason to be in my garage.

In my close circle of friends, four have acquired new cars - mine, a Kia Soul, Honda Jazz 1.2 CVT and more fresh than mine a BMW X3 with options of course.
As mentioned in my previous post, the Swift is a runabout which will do about 12,000km per annum. My friend who bought the X3 will be doing regular long trips and rates comfort very high on his 'want' list so there is really no comparison....until a woman's logic steps in!
"Good Lord" she says " How can one justify the purchase of a X3 when one can buy FIVE Swifts for the same price!"

Ja swaer, if a woman is not in the kitchen, she is off sides.

Gratz on the new wheels!

I've heard many things about the Swift so maybe it's time I took it for a test drive.

Within that budget, I would say the new 1.0T Opel Corsa is good buy if you can find a demo. If not, Renault Clio or Kia Rio is also good buy. Suzuki Swift 1.4 is fun little car, however it's boot is too small.

Picked up my Clio 0.9T Dynamique this past weekend, and I am truly amazed by what it comes with, from folding mirrors, rain sensing whipers, auto headlights, tire pressure monitor, built-in SatNav, keyless entry+go, auto locking when walking away from the car etc... Renault have packed it with a lot.

I'm getting 6.4l/100km, been a bit heavy footed as I'm loving the little tubocharged motor

I have decided to drop the budget to R140k. So Polo vivo and the likes. Just cannot justify paying that much for a vehicle right now. The Clio does sound like a great car though with nice fuel economy.

So I'm looking at a Fiesta or maybe a Hyundai i20 or BMW 335i M-Sport in white.

Is theft a concern for you? I say that as I left a Polo Vivo 1.4 partly due to it.

Don't get me wrong, those Vivos are excellent little workhorses, mine had 90,000km, I had abused it (a lot of over revving/red lining, potholes, lots of gravel roads etc...) yet it still looked new, and the whole car just kept going like it was fresh out the box, nothing fell apart, and servicing is super cheap, I literally could go on about how tough they are, but with so many getting stolen/hijacked & stripped, my insurance even warned me to take extra care, I decided to move on.

I'd highly recommend a Suzuki Swift, old colleague of mine had one, truly great car and there are 2016 models going for around R150K, I'm sure you can negotiate down, or get a 2015.

Yeah the Polo risk does concern me. I think I'm gonna go for a swift. Cheers guys.

If you can get the Corsa Essentia with option pack (A/C and touchscreen) then you have a pretty sweet deal.
