Which Headset is the best for Gaming?

Analog 5.1 headphones aren't a gimmick. I have a pair and you're welcome to try. USB 5.1/7.1 is more gimmicky but even that has value because it does increase the sense of surround sound when you're in a game. I mean, sure you have 2 ears, but you can still clearly tell the direction a sound is coming from, so why would it be different in headphones?

Roccat Kave 5.1 I have is just too unpleasant for long sessons. Why I went with above...

Yeah I agree that getting some better quality headphones is more important than 5.1/7.1. I still maintain you can tell the difference between directional and non-directional headphones though, so they aren't a gimmick. But your Beyerdynamics must have cost quite a bit more than the Kaves - R930 vs R3400 from what I can tell. So I'm not surprised that it's a better experience. I'm using a pair of R2k Monster headphones and they kick the teeth out of my Sirus for sound quality, and the DT990s should be a whole other step above that.

Sure if there is actually proper directional audio whether its dolby or something else its great. With Dolby Headphone on and then movies or games supporting it its actually quite good :D

I see the price for my phones has increased however, I paid ±2700.
 
Thanks for the input, peeps.

After doing some reading, I'll stick with my Sennheiser 380's + Asus Xonar to drive them. Wanted to try out analogue 5.1 surround but doesn't seem worth the investment (especially since I plan to upgrade my graphics card in the next couple of months).

I'm not convinced. I'll have to try it sometime though.
Perhaps 5.1 cans are better in situations where the source of the sound isn't accurately mimicking surround.
Take the virtual barber audio for example. That audio has been properly processed, and even cheap headphones will give you a full surround experience.

I've done the virtual barber audio experience. It's effective, but the difference in games is that the software supports 5.1 and stereo, and if you plug in a stereo source it isn't going to give you all the directional points. It's exactly the same as having stereo speakers or 5.1. In the Corsairs for instance if you turn Dolby off and on, you get an immediate sense of expansion. In addition, an analog 5.1 headset will have separated speakers which your ears can distinguish. I am not saying that I'd rather use a 5.1 analog gaming headset than really great studio headphones, but I also don't think it's a gimmick since it does actually work.

I have a Razer Kraken which i am very happy with, and it didn't break the bank.

It's not the same, I don't know how else I can say it. I have a lovely pair of stereo headphones I'm wearing now, sound quality is much better than the Sirus, but the directionality of the Sirus is still completely different.
 
I'd like to try a 5.1 headset to compare.
I started using Philips Fidelio X2 on Xonar D2X this week. I set all programs to 5.1 and the Xonar control panel to 5.1 source and headphone/stereo output. I'm assuming it does a down mix?
These days a lot of games don't let you select an option they just use the Windows settings.
 
Get yourself the Audio Technica ATH M50x headphones with a good clip on mic if you need one.

It blows the following headsets I've owned in the past, simply out of the water.

Steelseries Siberia V2 -- Its pretty good.
Logitech G35 7.1 virtual surround sound -- Its reasonably good
Sound blaster Recon3D omega wireless -- Its almost reasonably good
Sirus Storm 5.1 true surround -- Its reasonably junk.


If you are finicky about audio quality, get proper headphones and forget about headsets (maybe the Sennheiser Game One / Game Zero would be exceptions)
Stay away from "true 5.1" headsets.
You're also kinda wasting your money by paying more for "virtual surround" headsets.

Just my 2c.

I'm using a Steelseries Siberia 200. They are comfy, the mic retracts into the left ear cup when not needed. I found that the mic was a bit soft when I first used TS but that was the settings on my laptop.

The sound is great and I sh*te myself when running after 10pm in 7 days to die.
