Hi there.

Please move to correct forum if this is wrong.

Which hosting company with a solution do you prefer? My website is about 50MB with about 500MB of traffic. I had a look at Afrihost and they seem very good.

Any comments will be very welcome.

Regards,
Deon

Hello DeonH,

Do you want to host locally or in the US/UK?

We have a local hosting option that offers 500MB of disc space and 1000MB of traffic for R39.95/month. The server runs cPanel + PHP 5 and MySQL. Please see the link in my signature for more details.

Hetzner?

I only have good things to say about Hetzner's hosting. You should check if they can give you what you want.

If it's a single site and you don't mind US hosting, I suggest going with http://www.mddhosting.com/hosting.php - 10 GB disk space, 120 GB bandwidth per month for ~ R 55 per month. I've been with them for a while (reseller hosting) and their support is brilliant.

trust me on this. host overseas. You'll always get more bang for your buck. We host all our clients overseas.

I've had nothing but excellent service from JasonH at Elitehost, then again I've also had great service from Hetzner. The different for me is the support that both are able to offer, and Jason offers great 1 on 1 service at all times of the day and has gone beyond the norm to accommodate the needs of my site.

It depends on how much "buck" you have, and what you need to accomplish :) Overseas hosting is cheaper, yes, but is also slower and can hinder business. I'm not saying don't host local, I'm saying look at the benefit of both options and decide what is more important.

Depends who you use, our client sites hosted overseas load much quicker than many sites hosted locally.

Then the local company you use has issues ;) What overseas company do you use, which has less than 30ms ping response to their network?

Just did a ping test now: to www.softdux.co.za the average ping is 331 ms. When pinging a site on my UK server the average was 256 ms.

But even if local is faster in some instances, it's a toss-up between a few ms in speed difference and a couple hundred rand. How much do you charge for a dedicated server with 160 GB hard drive and, say 1 TB bandwidth monthly (as I'm not aware of any local hosts that don't limit bandwidth)? At the moment I pay R 950 a month for that using a UK host which accesses a Tier 1 network with 50,000Mbit connectivity.

softdux.co.za isn't local, but I'm sure you'll have picked that up if you did a traceroute to it :)

And R950 pm for that server is a bit expensive, by the way

Which local site do you have that I can test?

R 950 expensive? Can you provide a local server with that spec for cheaper?

Godaddy has been good for me thus far.
Brilliant support.

*shiver* Reasons why not to use Godaddy?
  • West coast USA
  • Overloaded servers
  • hell of a laggy
Fine use them to register your domains if you like but in my experience their hosting is not great (from South Africa).
