Which Internet browser do you use and why?

Chrome: simple, easy to use, neat, good security

Added bonus on mobile: you can easily download almost any video that can be streamed straight from Chrome (except from sites like YouTube)

What for?

- Makes web pages less ugly and cluttered
- Reduces your exposure to malware
- Speeds up web browsing by not loading ads

I read recently that ads can comprise up to 79% of data used for web browsing. The study concerned mobile browsing though I think. Still, it must apply to some material extent on desktop too.

I'm a purist. Like the internet whole, unfiltered, and unexpurgated.

Besides, people like MyBB rely on our eyes to see the ads that keep an onion in their soup. I'm happy to help them.

Do you at least block pop-ups?

You can whitelist domains to support sites. When I use PCs that don't have an ad blocker installed my eyes start to hurt while web browsing. The internet is so much nicer without ads imo.

What a grim malady to have. Sorry to hear you suffer such an impediment. You must have a torrid time driving, reading newspapers and magazines, etc?

It's more to do with rendering sites with ads when I'm used to them without ads. Colour palettes are wrecked, nav bars get shoved way down, typography is ruined by the prominence of ad banners, pages are slower while ads are loaded etc. etc.

There's something sickening about seeing a retarded version of something you enjoy using.

Not ADP (to add: their new acceptable adds acts as an extra filter instead of blocking), and uBlock Origin has a nice article on Github: Doesn't uBlock Origin add overhead to page load?
You need to take into account most sites are not nice (Wikipedia is a nice site according to the article), but the loss is only 53ms worst-case.

MyBB on the other hand:

Look at those add load times.
Here is another article: https://gladly.io/blog/2016/04/06/adblockers-can-save-24-hours-year-loading-times/

Thanks for the info. I noticed a long time ago that ABP was a slow POS and switched to uBlock Origin. Going by those charts, looks like it makes things better.

Another problem though is selection bias. Those example websites are not typical of the average webpage. Their immense popularity would make them far more likely to have first party ads and a more professional website with a more considerate degree of advertising. Run of the mill websites can be really bogged down in ads. What you lose in CPU usage you should more than make up for with data saved and reduced exposure to malware.

Most slow machines also have very little RAM, the CPU cycles are insignificant for e.g. uBlock origin compared to how much memory the adds use. Take the animated GIFs on MyBB home page, the CPU usage saved there is probably more than was "wasted" over a couple of no-add sites.
