All depends on your needs so you will have to elaborate a bit more.

basically for home use downloads etc... well affordable mainly!

That is not enough elaborating!

What downloads? Local content? News servers? Torrents?

Home use? Like checking the weather and emails daily? Playing online games? Streaming movies and music?

It all depends on how much you are going to download and what linespeed you have.

You can look at afrihost @R29/GB or if you want uncapped on a 384kb/s line Cybersmart offers (if you ask) uncapped/unshaped for R519 including adsl line rental. Digitchilli has a R300 uncapped package which is 256kb/s burstable to higher speeds but still in trial phase I think etc

There are plenty options available, you just need to pick what's right for you & fits your budget.

Is this true?

What provider do they use? SAIX, IS or Seacom? And do you know if you can use the local news servers with it?

Yes it is. I'm a current CS user and thinking of moving to uncapped soon as I probably spend more now as it is.

None of the above, they arrange their own bandwidth. They did trial seacom a while back but dropped it as it was not good enough.

Code:
Tracing route to www.l.google.com [209.85.229.104]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

Trace complete.

Should be able to do a WhoIS/DNS lookup to see who their provider is.

As far as I know you cannot use local IS & Saix news servers but I speak under correction. You can use other news servers though. Does it really matter if you are on uncapped?

The only problem is the additional cost of these other servers. You are looking at $10+ per month which is not much but it adds to the overall cost.

I obviously want to reduce my costs if I go uncapped as I cannot see my usage increasing too much from what it currently is. This means factoring in all costs. The only current "downside" is that I end up limiting my monthly NS downloads to my local allowance. It means keeping an eye on my data usage.

Yes! Playing online games, Streaming movies and music, Emails, hopefully a fast connection.

i would not say budget is a problem becoz i have tried a few and i experience lots of problems with them so may be if one knows of a good one that you can recommend i guess.

If you are downloading from news servers then get a Telkom Do package. These can still not be beaten for per Gb prices. Do2 = R258, inclusive of ADSL line rental of R152, gives you 3Gb international. Therefore R35 per Gb for the data BUT you then also get 20Gb of local data to use. These are 384k prices. If you want speed you pay.

For pure international you'd have to go with Afrihost at R29 per Gb but you'd still need your ADSL line through Telkom at R152.

I currently use a mixture of three ISPs:

  • Nashua at R139 for 1Gb but it includes my 384k line rental so it is cheaper than Telkom direct.
  • Telkom All Access at R149 for 3Gb blended with 20Gb local for my downloads.
  • Afrihost at R145 for 5Gb for extra international bandwidth.

:)

Actually just reading my own set up I need to get rid of Nashua and rather get Do2 instead of Telkom AllAccess 2! This will make the overall package cheaper for the loss of only 1Gb... ;)
