Many jobs that I am looking into require some iPhone / iOS exposure. I don't need to be an Apple certified know-it-all, just know my way around the device.

Which irritation of the iPhone should I be looking at getting that will allow me to do the basics plus some more? I can get an iPhone 7 in good condition with a 12 month warranty for £90

What are you doing now that you’re not DairyFarming?

iPhones generally receive 5-6 years of software supports. iOS 15 will probably be the last for the 6S which means the next update could be the last for the 7. An 8 might be a safer bet depending how long you want to keep it.

I've had an 8 for 2 years now. Really good. Only drawback is short battery useage life

I'll look around a bit more. Seen some in good condition for about £80.

Just be careful if buying privately that it hasn't had a screen replacement as it could screw up the touch ID. Apple will do a genuine battery replacement for £49 if you need it.

Lots of sites offer 2 month warranties.
Edit 12 months not 2 months

Another option is to join avforums.com and see what’s available, it’s private sales but the site has really strict selling rules. I’ve bought and sold a fair bit there without problems.

I have also seen some on Preloved. They have Trustap so you have time to check what you received is what was sold before the seller gets their money.

Is this for development?

Save your money and buy an M1 Air and use the emulators instead.

No. Just for experience. I just can't afford to spend on an iPad or Mac, but thought iPhone would be a good start.

Experience for what though?

For support work? Then get the Mac as it’s an actually useful skill.

iOS you can learn in a day holding one for a user.
