Which is the best Road map software in SA ?

Hi friends

I'm accustomed to VEZA's road map package which works rather well for finding routes and destinations to different places.

My problem is this, it's TERRIBLY inaccurate. We do most of our work in the Transkei/Eastern Cape and not only do many roads not show up, but we make use of the distancing tool to work out travel costs for contractors etc. and this tool is out by 50kms on a 300km trip.

Can any of you recommend a software package worth getting that is similar but more reliable than VEZA ?
 
Garmin / Tom Tom ... same company makes the software, but its given me the best directions of the lot. I use the Garmin Mobile XT version.

I've highlighted your real problem. The Eastern Cape has not been mapped fully yet as any Garmin/Tom Tom owner will tell you.
 
Any idea on costs etc. for these packages (without having to buy an actual GPS) ?

AFAIK the Garmap maps are unique to Garmin and are currently the best available.
 
Yep - costs are normally based on what version of the maps one already has installed. Ie, when I bought my Nuvi it had v1 maps installed. I could then get v1.5 for free. However, if I wanted to buy v1.5 without providing my v1 serial number, it would have costed some R500 odd bucks.

Get a garmin at Makro - they are dirt cheap these days.

Nope ... used to sell these things when I was at Cats and spoken to Garmin / Tom Tom reps ... same company creates the maps for them. Garmin says they are always 1 version ahead, and Tom Tom denies this, so not sure about the version ... but it is ... or at least was the same company.
 
You can get a nice Garmin at any store for around R2000.
I have VEZA too. Really inaccurate and it also doesn't update removed streets (a road close to us was "in the pipeline but never actually constructed" but VEZA has it....WTF!!).
Garmin IMHO has no parallel. Except of course AA's good ol' roadmaps with the Caltex rabbits on the back. :D
 
VEZA is completely inaccurate... VEZA can be used mainly to get estimates of trips, but not really for accurate traveling... Get a Garmin GPS... Problem solved...!

That might have been the case with the non Garmap SA maps - however the current series of Garmap are unique to Garmin if Avnic the official distributors of Garmin are to be believed.
